FAQs

Should you ever be in Da Nang, Vietnam, one place you can't afford to miss is Linh Ung Pagoda. Irrespective of if you are a history buff, someone looking for religious experiences, or just someone who is looking for breathtaking scenery, this place has something for everybody.

As someone who is drawn to travel and adventure, and especially while being associated with Jungle Boss, I have had countless chances to go to Linh Ung Pagoda, a place that still fascinates me. The serene nature, rich culture, and breathtaking architecture place it in one of my top sites in Da Nang. An inexpressible sensation overtakes me as I stand next to the gigantic Lady Buddha statue, the biggest in Vietnam, looking out at sea; it really gives a different attitude towards life and in a way reminds me about Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, Brazil!

A Peek at Linh Ung Pagoda

A question asked time and time again is, "Where is Linh Ung Pagoda?" To one's surprise, there are at least three different Linh Ung Pagodas in Da Nang!

  • Located on the Son Tra Peninsula is celebrated for being home to the famed statue of Lady Buddha.

  • Located within Marble Mountains, Linh Ung Pagoda is the oldest among the trio, featuring exquisite Buddha paintings and holding hidden grottos.

  • Situated in Ba Na Hills, Linh Ung Pagoda is just near the Golden Bridge and is a quiet retreat away from tourist hordes.

Every pagoda is unique in its own way, but the one situated at the top of Son Tra Peninsula is perhaps the most visited and is highly recommendable in my book. Its stunning structure, serene landscape, and breathtaking sea scenery are truly out of this world.

Linh Ung Pagoda on Son Tra Peninsula

Location and Directions for Accessing

Perched gracefully at the top of the Son Tra Peninsula, Linh Ung Pagoda lies about 10 kilometers away from central Da Nang. It is conveniently reachable, be it motorbike, cab, or as part of a guided tour. A good option for adventure enthusiasts is to rent a motorbike and ride at a relaxed pace.

A Legendary Origin

The history surrounding this pagoda is wrapped in a fascinating local legend. Centuries back in time, when Emperor Minh Mang ruled in the Nguyen Dynasty, there is a legend about a Buddha statue miraculously being swept to the shoreline of the Son Tra Peninsula. The villagers took this as a divine signal and quickly erected a simple shrine in commemoration. Soon enough, the stormy sea quietened down, and their fisheries prospered in increased richness. Jumping back in time to 2004, there rose in this revered place a wonderful pagoda, today being the biggest in Da Nang.

Architectural Highlights

Mughal

  • The Grand Entrance is revealed before us, featuring an imposing trio of gates embellished with finely etched engravings of dragons.

  • The Main Hall features a majestically arched pagoda roof, evocatively suggesting a refined Chinese dragon's tail, characteristic of orthodox Vietnamese Buddhist buildings. Inside, there are figurines of Sakyamuni Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and Buddha Tripitaka.

  • 18 Arhat Statues – Along the path, you'll see 18 statues representing different human emotions (joy, anger, love, hate). Each one is unique and beautifully sculpted.

The legendary statue of Lady Buddha

The 67-meter-tall Lady Buddha is Vietnam's tallest Buddha statue, towering like a guardian of the sea. She stands on a lotus-shaped pedestal with 17 floors inside, each housing Buddha statues.

What I like best about this location is the calmness it gives out. Locals and visitors go there in hopes of receiving good luck and favors, and some are convinced that the statue protects Da Nang from calamities.

Breathtaking Views

From the pagoda, there is a breathtaking panorama overlooking Da Nang's coast, with the East Sea in front, the Cham Islands to the left, and Hai Van Pass rising in the right-hand background. Should you be lucky enough to be there in the early morning or early afternoon, the scenery is truly magic.

Linh Ung Pagoda in Marble Mountains

Xa Loi Tower Stands at 28m Tall, Danang, Vietnam

Setting and Context

Perched gracefully at the top of Water Mountain, one of five Marble Mountains, is the Pagoda of Linh Ung. It is situated about 10 kilometers east-southeast of central Da Nang and has since 1825 been a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists.

In the time of the Nguyen Dynasty, it had been known as Ung Chon Tu and had just undergone some repairs. It had changed name in 1841 and had since risen to be one of the most revered sites in the area.

Architectural and religious features

  • The White Buddha Statue – A 10-meter-tall Buddha statue sits with its back to the mountain, facing the pagoda. It's an impressive sight, especially in the morning light.

  • Xa Loi Tower – Built in 1997, this 28-meter-tall, 7-story tower houses 200 Buddha, Bodhisattva, and Arhat statues, making it the largest stone Buddha collection in Vietnam.

  • The Main Hall is warmly wrapped in Sakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha, as well as countless respected monks, imbuing the area in a deeply religious essence.

In contrast to Pagoda Tra Son, this is veiled in secrecy and quietude and is wrapped in caves and lush greenery. It is a must-visit for those who are drawn to old buildings, hidden shrines, and serene moods.

The Best Time to Visit Linh Ung Pagoda

To truly experience the essence of Linh Ung Pagoda, one should be considerate about when to go.

The Ideal Visitation Time

Da Nang has two major seasons:

  • The dry season, lasting from March to September, is unquestionably the best time for a visit. The sun shines hotly and brightly, and the blue sky is cloudless, providing a spectacular background for the pagoda.

  • The rainy period, running from October to February, can be truly wonderful, as long as one is prepared for sudden downpours and foggy conditions. To those who are not discouraged by gloomy days, it casts a fascinating magic upon the landscape of the pagoda.

Best Time of Day

  • Early Morning (6:00 AM – 8:00 AM) – Fewer tourists, cooler temperatures, and a peaceful atmosphere make this the ideal time to visit. You might even catch the sunrise over the sea!

  • Late Afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM) – It is a time when photography enthusiasts can capture some spectacular shots. The temperatures are also milder compared to midday.

  • As evening falls, after 6:00 PM, visitors are welcome at the Linh Ung Pagoda in Son Tra Peninsula up to 9:00 PM, bathed in nighttime lights. In addition, there is much more calm in the air after sunset.

Festivals and Special Events

Vesak Known as Buddhas Day Celebrated in Vietnam

Should fortune befall you in a Buddhist holiday, the pagoda is changed overnight into a richly patterned fabric of rituals, chanting, and native believers offering gifts.

  • Vesak, known as Buddha's Day, is observed in May and features a pagoda decorated with exquisite lanterns.

  • Ghost Festival (mid-July – mid-August, lunar calendar) – A period when natives pray for dead ancestors, creating a deeply religious ambience.

Reflections and Last Thoughts on My Experience

I have visited Linh Ung Pagoda on several occasions, and truly, it is amongst my favorites in Da Nang. Standing in front of and gazing out at the enormous Lady Buddha statue towering at a height of 67 meters is truly beyond description, yet at the same time is incredibly humbling in a wonderful way.

I remember arriving at sunrise, when hardly a visitor could be spotted—only a few monks whispering in the background, their chants blending in with the quietude. The air felt invigoratingly cool, the sky painted with a soft blush, and nature oozing sheer beauty. It felt like time had slowed down—a rare gem in the relentless fastpaces life I experienced in bustling cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi minh!

If this is your first time, I highly recommend

  • Going early in the morning or around sunset for the best experience.

  • There's something refreshing about just sitting and soaking in the calm surrounding you. Try to just sit still rather for a few minutes and you will know what I am talking about.

  • Bringing along a photographer is a must, as the scenery is breathtaking or if you have a friend who’s good with their instagram photo shoot skills then no need to pay for a photographer!

Whether you're here for the spiritual experience, the architecture, or just the views, Linh Ung Pagoda is 100% worth a visit. If you're in Da Nang, don't miss it!
