Blessed with stunning terraced rice fields, Mu Cang Chai is a lesser-known place in the northwestern mountainous region of Vietnam. I've had the privilege of traveling through this captivating district as a travel writer for Jungle Boss, and I'm excited to offer tips to help you get a trip to remember for lifetime!

Why you should visit Mu Cang Chai

Amazing Rice Fields That Look Like Terraces

Mu Cang Chai’s terraced rice fields are some of the most sublime in Asia, shaped over the centuries by the Hmong people. Farms spread out over the mountains, creating layered tapestries that shift colors with every season, turning into a sight for sore eyes for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Rich Cultural Heritage

Mu Cang Chai is the home of the Black Hmong ethnic group, which brings you an authentic cultural experience. Here, visitors will be able to learn about traditional customs, mysterious crafts, and special daily life, through which visitors can learn more about the diversified cultural heritage of Vietnam.

Best Time to Visit

The best times to visit are late May through June, when the fields are green and lush, and from late September to early October, at golden harvest time. Each provides a distinct view of the beauty of the landscape.

Getting There

Mu Cang Chai is about 300 km from Hanoi. For travelers, there is National Highway 32, which covers about 400 kilometers of scenic roads, including picturesque mountain passes like Khau Pha. The route is drive-able or bike-able, and you can also find bus services.

I would highly recommend you to drive your own motorbike if you can as the journey to reach there was so scenic that we stopped more than a dozen times on the way just to take some pictures or just to take in the views!

Where to Stay

3. Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge Is a Tourist Spot in Itself

From eco-lodges to homestays, accommodations in the park allow visitors to connect with nature and local communities. During this experience, you can’t miss a stay at one of the hotels in the area, such as Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge (rated 4.4 stars on google) or Garrya Mu Cang Chai (rated 4.7 stars on google). They are not that costly either if you book directly from them!

Must-See Attractions

4. Drone Shot of Tu Le Valley in Vietnam

Tu Le Valley

Situated east of Mu Cang Chai, Tu Le Valley will surprise you with its fertile rice terraces and scenic mountain vistas. In the harvest season, the valley turns golden, making for wonderful views which are so unreal that people might just think you have added some instagram filter in your pictures!

Local Villages

Ethnic villages offer a unique experience to witness the daily life of the Hmong people. Immerse yourself in traditional crafts and explore stilt houses, while feeling the warmth of local hospitality. Just go out and talk with a local even when you don’t understand the language.

Unlike larger cities like Hanoi where people are in a rush and might at times seem aloof, in villages here they were so kind and welcoming that I was feeling like their family member!

Khau Pha Pass

Khau Pha, one of Vietnam’s most iconic mountain passes, is as picturesque as it is difficult to drive. It’s additionally a well-known place for paragliding, offering a vantage point for a bird’s-eye view over the terraced fields. I paraglided there (tandem) and it was insanely picturesque and might give the paragliding scene in Dubai a run for its money!

Paragliding is offered by multiple tour operators there and costs around 420K VND (~16 USD).

While visitors can take in the beautiful countryside on foot or by bike, adventure enthusiasts can get their blood pumping by paragliding over the golden fields during harvest season. This is a must do activity there!

Travel Tips

  • How long? 2-3 days is a good amount of time to cover most sights and get to know the local culture.

  • Currency: The Vietnamese Dong is the national currency; you should carry enough cash as cards usually do not work, and ATM machines are not always available.

  • Local Tourism Festivals: If you travel to Mu Cang Chai in September, you can attend the Mu Cang Chai festival, which is held in the autumn with many cultural activities.

Our Take

Mu Cang Chai is a perfect blend of nature and culture. Whether through trekking the terraced fields, interacting with local communities, or just soaking in the mountainous views, this region offers an unmatched experience. If you want to do something out of the old tourist trail of just Hanoi, Sapa, Ho Chi Minh City etc then add this hidden spot in your places to visit in Vietnam list!

FAQ

Is Mu Cang Chai worth visiting?

100% it is, yes yes yes! You can do tons of adventure activities here like Paragliding and trekking. Well even if you don’t like those, just get a bike and just roam around the villages in the early morning or evening, it's ten times better than just sitting in a group tour bus and doing what most other tourists do typically in Vietnam!

How do I get to Mu Cang Chai?

Mu Cang Chai is approx. 300 kilometers northwest of Hanoi. Travelers can reach it by:

  • Bus: Direct buses from Hanoi to Mu Cang Chai are available, with journeys taking around 6 to 7 hours. Opt for sleeper buses which should cost you around 200k to 300k VND ($8 to $12).

  • Private Car or Taxi: This option offers flexibility and comfort, with the trip typically lasting 6 to 7 hours. Perfect for a family trip but if you are a solo traveler just avoid it due to high costs and feeling of being a simple tourist!

  • Motorbike: For the adventurous, renting a motorbike allows for a more personal experience of the journey. However, ensure you're well-prepared as there are sharp curves along the way. It can be a bit dangerous if you are not well accustomed to driving in the hills.

Is Mu Cang Chai better than Sapa?

Both Mu Cang Chai and Sapa offer unique experiences:

  • Sapa: More developed in terms of tourism infrastructure, Sapa provides a lot of options for hotels and homestays and on the cheaper side too. It's known for its diverse ethnic communities and scenic landscapes. But if I am being honest it might feel more touristic to you due to heavy commercialisation and influx of tourists especially from China due to its close proximity to the country.

  • Mu Cang Chai: Offers a more rustic and authentic experience, with fewer tourists and untouched natural beauty. I loved the terraced rice fields here more than Sapa. If I had to choose b/w Sapa and Mu Can Chai, I would choose Mu Cang Chai since I felt more like an explorer here rather than a tourist!

What is Mu Cang Chai famous for?

Mu Cang Chai is celebrated for its expansive terraced rice fields, which have been recognized as national heritage sites. These terraces, especially in areas like La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, and De Xu Phinh are insanely beautiful!

How long should we stay in Mu Cang Chai?

I would recommend 2 to 3 days to fully appreciate the landscapes and immerse yourself in the scenery and interact with locals. This duration allows for trekking, visiting local markets, and engaging with the community and last but not the least try out all the famous local dishes!

How much is the entrance fee for Lao Chai Village?

As of recent information, the entrance fees for Lao Chai Village are:

  • Adults: 75,000 VND

  • Children: 50,000 VND

  • Children under 1 meter: Free of charge
