Vietnam Weather October 2027: Where to Go and Skip
Vietnam weather in October splits the country in three. Hanoi dries out to about 141 mm of rain and 29°C afternoons. The central coast has its wettest month of the year, with Hue averaging 773 mm. The south is still in its rainy season. Build the trip in the north, and treat Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang as a gamble you can afford to lose.
Vietnam weather October: city by city
Every figure below comes from one dataset, the long-term station tables in Vietnam's national building climate standard, QCVN 02:2022/BXD. They are averages, not a forecast. The tables have no Hoi An, Phong Nha or Saigon station, so those rows borrow Da Nang, Dong Hoi and Can Tho.
| Place | High / low, °C | Rain, mm | Rain days | October verdict |
| Hanoi | 29 / 23 | 141 | 10 | Go. Best city weather of the trip |
| Sapa | 19 / 14 | 201 | 19 | Go, with a fleece and grippy shoes |
| Halong (Bai Chay) | 29 / 22 | 143 | 9 | Go. Check the storm refund terms |
| Hue | 29 / 23 | 773 | 21 | Only with flexible bookings |
| Hoi An (Da Nang station) | 30 / 24 | 628 | 20 | Old town yes, beach week no |
| Da Nang | 30 / 24 | 628 | 20 | Skip as a beach base |
| Phong Nha (Dong Hoi station) | 28 / 23 | 649 | 19 | Dry caves and jungle treks run |
| Saigon (Can Tho proxy) | 31 / 24 | 301 | 22 | Go, plan round afternoon storms |
| Phu Quoc | 30 / 25 | 354 | 22 | Wait for December if you can |
| Mekong (Can Tho) | 31 / 24 | 301 | 22 | Go for the river, not the sun |
Read down the rain column. Hue gets more than five times Hanoi's October rain, and October is the wettest month of the year at Hue, Da Nang and Dong Hoi alike. Hanoi gets less than half the 309 mm it takes in August. The QCVN 02:2022 climate tables have the decimals.
A rain day counts any measurable shower, so 20 in Da Nang is not 20 washed-out days. To see how the weather in Vietnam in October fits the rest of the year, read the best time to visit Vietnam.
Weather in Hanoi in October, and the north around it
Hanoi is the safest bet in the country this month. Afternoons sit around 29°C, nights drop to 23°C and the humidity of summer starts to lift. A light jacket covers the evenings.
It is not guaranteed dry. On 7 October 2025, rain from Typhoon Matmo flooded about 30 major Hanoi streets, a week after Typhoon Bualoi's rain had done the same. Keep the last day free of anything you cannot move.

Ninh Binh is the easy day out. The Ninh Binh guide covers the boat trips through Trang An and Tam Coc, and it works as a day trip if Halong is called off.
Halong averages nine rain days at Bai Chay, the lowest count on the table. Cruises are still suspended when a storm warning goes up, so leave a night between the boat and an international flight.
Sapa is the cold one: 19°C by day, 14°C at night, 19 rain days. The rice usually turns gold from mid-September and most valley fields are cut by early or mid October. Late in the month you get stubble, mud and cloud: a good walk, not the postcard. The Sapa or Halong Bay comparison helps if you only have time for one.

Where to skip: the central coast as a beach holiday
Do not book a week on the beach in Da Nang or Hoi An for October. The sea is often too rough to swim and it rains on two days in three.
Last year showed what a bad October looks like. From 7 pm on 26 October 2025, Bach Ma Peak above Hue took 1,739.6 mm of rain in 24 hours, according to VnExpress. That is more than double Hue's average for the whole month. The Bo River in Hue crested at 5.31 m on 27 October, above the 2020 record, and Hoi An's Thu Bon reached 5.62 m around 30 October.

The trains stopped too. Vietnam Railways suspended services between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City during that flood, so an overland route through the centre can break in the middle. Hue and Hoi An still work as heritage stops with cancellable bookings. The Hoi An weather guide and the Vietnam rainy season guide go deeper.
Never walk, ride or drive through moving floodwater.
Phong Nha in October: what still runs
Dong Hoi averages 649 mm in October, so Phong Nha is wet. It is not shut. Jungle Boss runs every tour through October except three: Bach Ma Discovery and the two Do Quyen Waterfall tours, which close from September to November and reopen on 1 December. Every multi-day expedition stays on the calendar. A storm can still cancel a single date.

The one-day Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley trek is the cheapest way in: VND 1,950,000, daily, with hotel pickup from around 8:00 AM in Phong Nha or Dong Hoi, from age 9. You walk into Elephant Cave, swim in Ma Da Lake and finish at Tra Ang water cave, which runs more than 600 m. In October, ask when you book whether the Tra Ang swim is going ahead, because the water level decides it.
The south in October: Saigon, the Mekong and Phu Quoc
The south is hot, about 31°C, and still wet. Storms tend to build in the afternoon, so do the outdoor sights early.
Saigon's other October problem is the tide. On 23 and 24 October 2025 the Phu An gauge reached 1.77 m, level with the 2019 record, and a high tide on top of a storm puts low streets under water. Ask the hotel whether its street floods.

The Mekong runs full after the rains, which suits boat trips.
Phu Quoc averages 354 mm in October, against 164 mm in November and 59 mm in December. If the island is the point of the trip, move it to the end of the year. The Phu Quoc guide helps pick a beach, and Vietnam in November shows what changes a month later.
October festivals in 2027
Mid-Autumn falls on 15 September in 2027, so it is over before October starts. See the Mid-Autumn Festival guide.
That leaves two dates. Hanoi marks Capital Liberation Day on 10 October. Vietnamese Women's Day on 20 October fills flower stalls and restaurants, but it is not a public holiday.
Packing, crowds and prices
Pack a rain shell, quick-dry clothes and shoes that grip on wet stone. Leave the waterproof boots at home if you are trekking in Phong Nha, because they never dry. Trail shoes, or the army boots Jungle Boss lends out, work better.
Crowds follow the weather. The north tends to fill with October walkers while the central coast empties. There is no national October discount, so compare the real room price and cancellation fee.
Check the national weather service for storm warnings two or three days before any boat, pass or cave day.
