Phong Nha in October, November and December: What is Open

Phong Nha's show caves stay open through October, November and December. Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave run on normal wet days and close only when the Son River floods or a storm is inbound, typically for two to five days at a time. What stops is the water: river caves, swim-throughs and multi-day expeditions.

That distinction is the whole decision. If your trip is built around walking through a dry cave, the rainy season barely touches it. If it is built around swimming through one, you need a backup date or a tour that does not need the river.

What closes and what stays open

Quang Binh, now part of the merged Quang Tri province since July 2025, runs its rainy season from roughly mid-September to mid-December. Park authorities suspend activities by category rather than by site, so the pattern repeats every year.

The two calendars in the valley do not match, and the difference is worth knowing before you write the trip off. Oxalis, the operator that holds the Son Doong and Hang En permits, closes Hang En from mid-September and does not run Son Doong from September until the end of December. Jungle Boss does not run either of those caves, so if you have been quoted them by someone else you are dealing with Oxalis.

Jungle Boss closes three tours and no more: Bach Ma Discovery and the two Do Quyen Waterfall trips shut for September, October and November and reopen on 1 December. Everything else on its list runs all year, including every multi-day expedition. That is the opposite of what most weather pages will tell you about Phong Nha in autumn, and it is the reason a wet-season trip here is a scheduling problem rather than a cancelled holiday.

A useful nuance most weather pages miss: the Dark Cave zipline and mud bath package drops in price once the water activities stop. The full ticket runs 450,000 VND in high season and falls to roughly 250,000 to 270,000 VND when it is reduced to the walking sections. Cheaper, and much less to do.

The cave itself stays intact; it is the boat crossing that closes when the river rises.

How much rain falls in Phong Nha

Climate datasets disagree on Dong Hoi by a wide margin, which is worth knowing before you trust any single number you read. They agree on the shape.

Two things follow from that table. October carries roughly ten times February's rainfall, so it is not a marginal call. And December is not really a flood month at all.

The rain does not arrive evenly. Typhoons cross this coast from late April to early November, peaking July to October, and a single system can deliver a week's average in a night. In late October 2024, Storm Trami put enough water into the province that authorities suspended all cave tours, forest expeditions and water activities in the park at once. Roads went under. It lasted days, not weeks.

Temperatures drop with the rain. Dong Hoi averages a 28.6°C high in October, 26°C in November and 22.8°C in December, with December nights near 18°C. Inside the caves it sits cooler than that year-round, so the wet season is the one time you can be genuinely cold in Phong Nha.

The month to avoid if you have any flexibility, and the month to plan hard around if you do not. Assume two or three days of your week are unusable for anything involving water. Show caves and town activities carry the rest. The Phong Nha Cave entrance fee is 150,000 VND plus a boat, and the boat is the part that stops, not the cave.

Low season means the first kilometre of boardwalk is often near empty before ten in the morning.

Book accommodation with a real cancellation window and do not prepay a chain of connecting transfers. Road 20 and the route in from Dong Hoi flood at the low points, and buses get held rather than cancelled, which is worse for a tight schedule.

November

The month people underrate. Rainfall is still high on paper, but it arrives in bands with usable gaps, and visitor numbers are at their lowest of the year. Expedition operators start restarting river tours from mid-November depending on levels. Prices for rooms are at their floor. If you want Paradise Cave without a queue at the boardwalk, this is when.

December

Cool, grey, and mostly workable. Rain turns to persistent drizzle and the rivers drop. On 1 December, Bach Ma Discovery and the Do Quyen Waterfall tours come back onto the calendar after three months off, which makes December the first month of the year when the whole catalogue is bookable. Bring a fleece and a waterproof rather than the shorts you packed for Hoi An. Christmas and New Year weeks fill up fast in town, so book those two ahead even though it is low season everywhere else.

Across all three months the reliable booking is anything underground, because the cave does not care what the weather is doing outside.

What happens if your tour is called off

This is the question that actually stops people booking in October, and almost no page answers it. Jungle Boss's published policy on a weather cancellation gives three options: move the date at no extra cost, switch to a tour the weather has not affected, or take a full refund of the tour price if neither suits.

Cloud and mist are not the same as flooding, and the park stays open through them.

Cancelling yourself is a different matter and the notice period is strict.

There is one clause worth reading before you book a multi-day trip in the wet season: if you start a tour and have to turn back for your own reasons, there is no refund and your own onward costs are yours. That is standard in expedition caving, and it is a reason to be honest with yourself about fitness in a month when everything is slippery.

What to book instead when the rivers are up

The mistake is cancelling the trip. The fix is swapping the activity.

• Dry cave days. Paradise Cave, Tien Son and the walking sections of the show caves run in almost any rain.
• Bach Ma National Park, but only from 1 December. It is closed for September, October and November and reopens on the first of the month. Do not let anyone sell you it as an October plan B, because it is not running.
• Dry caves in the Tu Lan area. Several passages in that system sit above floodwater and stay open when the river caves do not. The Tu Lan cave tour options change shape in the wet season rather than disappearing.
• Town and valley. The Duck Stop, the botanic garden, the Commander Cave museum and a long lunch. Low ambition, and it works.
• Move up the coast. Hue to Phong Nha takes about four hours by road, so a flooded week in the park can become two nights in Hue without losing the trip.

Prices checked September 2026 against the operator and park listings. Cave ticket prices in the park are set by the provincial tourism centre and published figures vary between resellers, so carry cash and expect small differences at the counter.

What the wet season is like on the ground

Nothing dries. Humidity sits near saturation for weeks, so a second pair of trekking shoes is worth the luggage space. Leeches are at their most active in the days after heavy rain, which is when most people meet their first one. They are harmless and unpleasant, and the guides deal with them without ceremony.

The compensation is real. The waterfalls that are a trickle in May are running. The jungle is loud. You will share Paradise Cave with a handful of people rather than four coachloads, and the light coming through the mist over the karst is the reason photographers come in November rather than April. Compare it against the best time to visit Vietnam nationally before you decide, because central Vietnam's calendar runs opposite to the north's.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang became part of the first transboundary natural World Heritage site in the Mekong region in July 2025, when UNESCO extended the listing across the border to include Hin Nam No in Laos. The karst here began forming around 400 million years ago and is the oldest large-scale karst system in Asia. It has handled a few wet seasons.
