Vietnam Weather August 2027: Where It Rains, Where to Go
Vietnam weather in August is wettest in the north and still mostly dry on the central coast. Hanoi averages 309 mm of rain, its wettest month, and Halong 431 mm. Da Nang gets 141 mm and about seven hours of sun a day, so the beaches stay swimmable. The south is hot and showery. Vietnamese school holidays fill the coast until mid-month.
Vietnam weather in August, region by region
Every number in this table, and in the month comparison below it, is a long-term station average from Vietnam's building climate standard, QCVN 02:2022/BXD. Hoi An, Phong Nha and Saigon have no station of their own in it. Their rows use the nearest ones: Da Nang, Dong Hoi and Can Tho.

| Mekong (Can Tho) | 31 / 24 | 238 (22) | 180 | Go for the river, not the sun |
August is the wettest month of the year at Hanoi, Bai Chay and Phu Quoc. On the central coast it is the month the dry season starts to slip: Da Nang's rain goes from 93 mm in July to 141 mm, and then 351 mm in September. The full station figures, to one decimal, are in the national climate standard PDF.
The standard counts any day with measurable rain as a rain day. Most August rain falls in one or two hard hours in the afternoon, so 17 rain days in Hanoi does not mean 17 lost days. The month by month picture is in the best time to visit Vietnam.
Vietnam in July, August or September?
The three summer months look alike on most weather sites. They are not. Same station tables, average rain in mm:
| Station | July | August | September |
| Hanoi | 280 | 309 | 228 |
| Halong (Bai Chay) | 364 | 431 | 276 |
| Hue | 95 | 139 | 411 |
| Da Nang | 93 | 141 | 351 |
| Dong Hoi (Phong Nha) | 76 | 166 | 473 |
| Can Tho (south) | 236 | 238 | 251 |
| Phu Quoc | 419 | 486 | 474 |
Read it as two seasons crossing. The north peaks in August and eases in September. The centre does the opposite: Dong Hoi's rain almost triples from August to September, and Hue's nearly does too. For the central coast, the drier month is Vietnam in July; for a north-only trip, wait for Vietnam in September. The south barely changes.
Where to go in August: Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang
The central coast is the safe part of an August trip. Da Nang has 215 hours of sun and rain on about 12 days, mostly short storms, and the sea at My Khe and Non Nuoc is usually calm enough to swim. Hoi An's old town is hot, 34°C by day, so walk it before 10 am and after 5 pm.

Hue is the hottest city on the route at 34°C, with an August record of 39.7°C at the station. Go to the citadel as it opens. The catch comes late in the month, when storms from the South China Sea start reaching this coast. Our Da Nang weather guide shows how fast the rain climbs into September.
From Hue you can be at Do Quyen waterfall in Bach Ma National Park the same morning, with pickup at your hotel. August is its last open month: Jungle Boss closes both Do Quyen trips from 1 September and reopens them on 1 December. The 2-day Top Adventure, VND 11,250,000 a person, leaves daily for up to 12 people aged 12 and over. It has a 130 m suspension ladder, 301 steps of via ferrata, an 85 m zipline and a 200 m rope descent down the falls.
Book central coast hotels early for the first half of the month. Vietnamese schools are on summer break until about mid-August, and Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang fill with domestic families, especially at weekends.
The north in August: Hanoi, Halong and Sapa
Hanoi is at its wettest, 309 mm on 17 days, and the storms are heavy. Low streets flood during a heavy downpour, so carry sandals. August is also com season, when stalls sell young green sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves.
Halong takes 431 mm, more than a fifth of its yearly rain, with thunder on about 11 days. The sea is at its warmest, about 30°C. When a storm warning goes up, the authorities stop every boat in the bay, so book a cruise company with clear refund terms and keep a spare day before your flight home. The Halong Bay weather guide has every month, and our Halong Bay cruise guide compares the trips.
Sapa is cool, 23°C by day, and wet, 452 mm on 23 days. The rice is tall and green. Further south in Mu Cang Chai, the first terraces around Tu Le and Khau Pha start turning gold in late August. Ban Gioc waterfall on the Chinese border is at its fullest after the summer rain.

Phong Nha in August: every tour runs
Dong Hoi averages 166 mm in August on 11 days, more than July's 76 mm but still far below the 473 mm of September. Thunder is rarer here than in Hanoi, about four days in the month against ten. The heat is the harder part. It is 33°C by day and humid under the canopy, so on a jungle trek you will be soaked in sweat by mid-morning, and the cool air inside the caves comes as a relief.

Every Jungle Boss tour runs in August. It is also the last month for the three tours that close from September to November, all on the Hue side: Bach Ma Discovery and the two Do Quyen Waterfall trips, which reopen on 1 December. If Do Quyen is on your list, it is August or wait for winter. Our Phong Nha travel guide covers getting there.
Storms still reach this coast in late August. Typhoon Kajiki came ashore between Nghe An and Ha Tinh on 25 August 2025, and Dong Hoi airport, the one that serves Phong Nha, closed from 4 am to 4 pm that day, the government news portal reported. The Hanoi to Vinh night trains were cancelled too. Leave a day of slack either side of a trek in the last week of the month.
If you want the longest trip we run, the Kong Collapse Top Adventure is five days underground and in the jungle for VND 35,000,000 a person (price as of November 2026). Groups are capped at 10, departures are Tuesday and Friday, the minimum age is 16, and our medical team checks every guest before the start. Nights are spent at Dai A Cave, in the floor of the Kong sinkhole and inside Pygmy Cave.
The south in August: Saigon, the Mekong and Phu Quoc
Can Tho, the nearest station to Saigon, logs 22 rain days in August, with highs of 31°C and lows of 24°C. Storms usually arrive between about 3 pm and 6 pm and last one to three hours. Mornings are clear, and the Mekong runs high and brown, which suits a boat day.
Saigon's storms usually hit between about 3 pm and 6 pm.
Phu Quoc is the one to skip. August is its wettest month of the year, 486 mm on 24 days, with 137 hours of sun, and the southwest monsoon puts surf on the west-coast beaches. Some snorkelling trips are cut or cancelled. The Phu Quoc guide helps pick a beach for November to April.
August festivals and holidays in 2027
Ghost Month, the 7th lunar month, runs from 2 to 31 August 2027. Vu Lan, the festival for parents and ancestors, falls on its 15th day, Monday 16 August 2027. Expect smoke from burning paper offerings outside houses and busy pagodas in the evening. The monthly Hoi An lantern festival, on the 14th lunar day, falls on Sunday 15 August 2027.
Pagodas fill with incense in Ghost Month.
There is no public holiday in August, but the National Day break runs from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 September 2027. Trains, flights and coastal hotels sell out for the last days of August and the first week of September. Book any move in that window early, and see the Vietnam train guide for how far ahead tickets open.
What to pack for August
- A rain shell with a hood, plus a dry bag for your phone and passport.
- Quick-dry clothes. Humidity averages about 83% in Hanoi in August.
- Sandals for flooded streets and shoes with grip for Sapa and cave trails.
- Insect repellent for the south and the Mekong, where dengue is more common in the wet season.
Check the national weather service two or three days before any cruise, flight or trek in the second half of the month.
