Phong Nha Cave Tours: Prices, Difficulty, Private Options

Phong Nha's cave tours divide into three groups: show caves you can walk into for the price of a ticket, guided day trips from about 1,350,000 dong, and multi-day expeditions from 5,175,000 dong up to around 79,500,000 for Son Doong. The decision is not really about which cave. It is about how wet you are willing to get, how fit you are, and whether you want a boardwalk or a rope. Prices checked September 2026.

Two operators run the serious tours. Jungle Boss and Oxalis hold different cave permits, so there is no overlap and no choice to make between them on any given cave: the cave decides the operator. Oxalis holds Son Doong, Hang En, Hang Va, Hang Tien and Tu Lan. Jungle Boss holds Hang Pygmy, Tiger Cave, Hung Thoong, Kong Collapse, Elephant Cave and the rest.

Phong Nha show caves you can visit without a guide

Ticket prices are set by the park authority and are the same for everyone. These need no guide, no booking and no fitness. If you have one day and no interest in ropes, do Paradise Cave in the morning and Phong Nha Cave after lunch, and skip Dark Cave unless you actively want the mud.

Guided day trips in Phong Nha

One warning about that last row, because the number is misleading. Tra Ang is the cheapest price on the list and it is private departures only, with a minimum of 20 people. A couple or a solo traveller cannot book it. The cheapest guided day an individual can actually join is Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley at 1,950,000 dong.

At Phong Nha Cave you float into the mountain rather than walk into it.

Note also that the Phong Huong tours leave from Khe Sanh town, not Phong Nha. They are a genuine day out and they are a different destination, roughly on the road between Hue and Dong Hoi.

Treat the cheapest number on any operator's list with suspicion. Some of the low prices are private departures with a minimum group size you will never fill on your own.

Multi-day cave expeditions in Phong Nha

Son Doong is sold out for 2026 and 2027 and the 2028 schedule is open, so it is a planning decision rather than a booking decision. Son Doong cave tour covers how the waiting list works, and Hang En cave tour is what most people book instead.

The price trap on booking sites

The page that currently outranks both operators for this search is a travel blog listing these tours through GetYourGuide and Viator. It is a decent list. It is also reselling. The park has been on the World Heritage list since 2003, and the UNESCO listing sets what may be visited and by whom.

Tu Lan includes a kilometre of swimming and the Elephant Cave day ends with 600 metres of it.

Hang Pygmy appears there at 349 US dollars. Booked directly it is 7,900,000 dong, about 304. Hung Thoong appears at 509 dollars against 12,000,000 dong direct, about 462. That is 45 to 47 dollars a head to book the same tour, with the same guides, through an intermediary.

Neither operator hides their prices. Both publish them. Check the operator's own site before booking anything through an aggregator, which is the same advice that applies to Vietnamese train tickets and for the same reason.

How fit you need to be for each tour

Oxalis publishes the clearest fitness standard in the valley and it is worth reading whichever operator you use. For Hang En, Hang Va and Tu Lan they ask that within the last twelve months you have completed an overnight trek or one to two day hikes of at least 6km a day on steep ground with 500m of ascent, and that you can climb five flights of stairs without distress or run 5km in 45 minutes.

Hang Pygmy involves a ten metre abseil in and a rope ascent back out.

That is a real bar and most people who walk regularly clear it. If you do not, the honest options are the show caves, a day trek, or getting fitter before you come.

The same expedition costs about 45 dollars more through an aggregator than booked direct.

Jungle Boss states minimum ages rather than fitness benchmarks: 9 for the Elephant Cave day, 15 for Hang Pygmy. Ask at booking, and be accurate about it. The cancellation terms give no refund if you start a multi-day tour and have to turn back.

Wet caves or dry caves in Phong Nha

Almost every serious cave tour here involves water. Tu Lan includes a kilometre of swimming. The Elephant Cave day ends with a 600 metre swim through a water cave. Hang Pygmy involves an abseil and prussiking back out.

Hang En is 25 kilometres of trekking with 650 metres of ascent before the caving starts.

If you cannot swim, say so at booking. Life vests are provided on every tour that needs them, but a guide needs to know before the group is in a river, not after.

When each Phong Nha cave tour runs

This is where the two operators genuinely differ, and no comparison page covers it.

Oxalis closes its river caves seasonally. Hang En runs December to mid-September, Hang Va December to August, Tu Lan mid-November to mid-September, and Son Doong does not run from September to the end of December.

Jungle Boss closes three tours and no more: Bach Ma Discovery and the two Do Quyen Waterfall trips shut for September, October and November and reopen on 1 December. Everything else, including every multi-day expedition, runs all year.

So in October, the practical position is that most of the Oxalis catalogue is shut and most of the Jungle Boss catalogue is open. In April both are fully open and you can choose on merit.

• One day, some effort. Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley, 1,950,000 dong, from age 9.
• First expedition. Tu Lan Cave Encounter at 6,700,000 or Hang Pygmy at 7,900,000. Both two days, both wet.
• The famous one. Hang En, 9,500,000 dong, 25km of trekking.
• The hard one. Kong Collapse, five days, 35,000,000 dong.
