Four Ways to Shape a Vietnam Honeymoon, and the Cost

Ten days is the right length for a Vietnam honeymoon and February to April is the right window, because it is the only period when the north, the centre and the islands are all dry at once. Budget 160 to 240 US dollars a day for a couple travelling comfortably, or 600 and upwards for resort-led. Book the resort and the private transfers ahead. Book almost nothing else.

The mistake most honeymoon itineraries make is treating the trip as a list of places. Vietnam is 1,650km long and the average visitor stays 8.1 days, so a list of places becomes a list of airports. Decide the shape of the trip first and the places follow from it.

Four trip shapes that work

Ten days covers two regions well or three at a push. Fourteen is where it stops feeling like a schedule. Anything under a week should be one region and one island, and the honest advice is to pick the island.

When to go on a Vietnam honeymoon

February, March and April are dry in the north and the centre at the same time, which no other period manages. December and January are cooler and still good. Avoid September and October, when typhoons hit the central coast and cruises get cancelled.

The islands run on their own clocks, and this catches people out. Phu Quoc is at its best from December to April. Con Dao is the opposite, best from March to September. If your wedding date is fixed, that pair usually decides which island you get rather than the other way round.

The four shapes in detail

Classic, 10 days

Hanoi for two nights, then two on the water. A Halong Bay cruise is the obvious choice and the busiest; Lan Ha Bay vs Halong Bay is worth reading first, because the quieter water is a better honeymoon and costs the same.

The quieter water of Lan Ha costs about the same as Halong and makes a better honeymoon.

Then fly to Da Nang. Three nights split between Hoi An and Hue gives you the lantern-lit old town and the tombs along the Perfume River, and things to do in Hoi An covers more than three days' worth. Finish with three nights on Phu Quoc.

Adventure leg, 14 days

Same skeleton, with six nights in the centre instead of three, and the extra time spent in the national park rather than the old town. This is the version for couples who have already worked out that they get bored by day four of a beach.

Phu Quoc runs December to April and Con Dao March to September, which often decides the dates.

The section that makes it a honeymoon rather than a holiday is a private guided day underground. It is the one activity on this list that is not on every other honeymoon article, it cannot be done independently, and a private departure means it is the two of you, a guide and a safety team rather than a group of sixteen.

Beach-heavy, 10 days

Three nights in one city to see something, seven on an island. Phu Quoc has the resort depth, with rooms running from the mid hundreds to well over a thousand US dollars a night at the top end. Con Dao is quieter, more remote and harder to reach, which is the point of it.

Book a room with a private pool if the budget reaches. On a honeymoon it is the upgrade that gets used every day, which is not true of most upgrades.

The full moon lantern evening falls on the 14th night of each lunar month and dinner books a week ahead.

North to south, 14 days

For couples who want to have seen Vietnam rather than to have rested in it. Hanoi, the centre, Saigon and the Mekong, with an island at the end as the recovery. Use the overnight train for at least one leg. It is a better story than a fourth airport and the soft sleeper berths are comfortable enough.

Central Vietnam is the part worth spending on

Every honeymoon article sends you to Hoi An for the lanterns and Halong for the boat. Both are good and both are shared with several thousand other people that day.

The centre has something neither the north nor the islands can offer, which is scale you cannot get to any other way. Phong Nha-Ke Bang, a World Heritage site shared with Laos since 2025, took 587,000 visitors in the first half of 2026 against 8.2 million at Halong Bay across 2025. It is the same limestone geology with roughly one visitor for every seven.

Practical notes for couples specifically. A guided cave day runs from 1,950,000 dong per person for a scheduled group departure. Private departures are available on most tours on request and cost more than the listed price, which for a honeymoon is usually the right trade. The two-day expeditions sleep in tents at a campsite with a mattress, pillow, blanket and a fan, which is more comfortable than it sounds and is still camping.

One scheduling note that no competitor publishes: across September, October and November, Jungle Boss closes exactly three tours, Bach Ma Discovery and the two Do Quyen Waterfall trips, reopening them on 1 December. Everything else, including every multi-day expedition, runs all year.

Book the things that sell out and leave the rest open. Halong cabins, Phu Quoc rooms over Tet and any guided cave day need booking ahead. Restaurants, drivers and day trips do not.

What to book ahead for a Vietnam honeymoon

The one dated exception: Hoi An's full moon lantern evening falls on the 14th night of each lunar month, and dinner reservations go about a week ahead for it. Everything else in that right-hand column is genuinely better arranged once you are there and know what you feel like.

Do not pre-book a packed daily schedule. The most common regret on a honeymoon itinerary is having paid for something on the morning you both wanted to stay in.

What a Vietnam honeymoon costs

Prices checked September 2026. The comfortable line buys three and four-star hotels, restaurant meals, private transfers between cities and a guided day or two. The resort line is mostly the room.
