The Cave Complaint, Answered Properly

This guide says Thien Cung and Sung Sot are pretty and too commercialised. That is easy to say and it deserves a proper answer, so here it is.

Those caves are lit, railed, paved and walked through in a queue, because they take thousands of people a day and there is no other way to do that safely. It is not a criticism of the caves. It is what mass access looks like.

• Titop Island: You can relax on the beach or hike up to the top for a great overview.

• The water sports: kayaking, or having a bamboo-boat trip to Luon Cave.

• Travel to Hanoi: Arrive around 4:30 pm, and then head for an evening tour around Hanoi.

  If you are staying in the area and have more time, then get a motorbike on rent (cost ~ $6) and browse around Bai Chay beach (Bai Chay Beach) and do parasailing, banana boat activities or just chill on the beach!

Is it worth taking the whole day for?

Yes, if a day is what you have. You get the boat, a cave, a kayak and an island in one go, and you are back in Hanoi by evening. What you do not get is the bay early or late, which is when it is worth seeing, because every day tour arrives and leaves inside the same four-hour window as every other day tour. If a day of boats, caves and islands is the format you like, the Indonesian version of it is a komodo island tour out of Labuan Bajo, on a bigger and emptier stretch of water.
