Phong Nha Town is a laid-back gateway to the home of Son doong cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, where colossal caves, jungle-clad hills and winding waterways await adventure seekers and culture lovers alike.
Whether you’re renting a motorbike to chase hidden grottoes, ziplining into Dark Cave’s muddy waters or camping beneath the towering vault of Hang Pygmy Cave, this friendly riverside hub delivers unforgettable experiences without breaking the bank.
From budget homestays under 200k VND to mid-range lodges with pools, plus a smorgasbord of local and international eats, Phong Nha Town truly has something for every traveler’s taste and budget.
Phong Nha Town stretches along Provincial Road 20, a short 2 km ribbon of guesthouses, cafes and tour operators running from Highway 14 down to the boat landings for Phong Nha Cave. Despite boom-town chatter, it retains a village-like vibe: riverside hammocks, colorful lanterns and friendly waves from locals.
Here is the location of Phong Nha town on google maps (Jungle Boss headquarter). It is just a 5 minute walk from the town center and you can always go there to get recommendations of where to stay, where to eat, and what to do in Phong Nha!
By bus: Regular minibuses and sleeper coaches run from nearby Dong Hoi (45 min, ~80 k VND) and Hoi An to Phong Nha Town’s center (overnight, ~350 k VND) .
By train: The nearest station is Dong Hoi; from there, Grab rides or buses whisk you into town. Take the local bus which is wayyyyyyy cheaper than a Grab car which could cost you around 300k VND easily. Buses run almost every hour.
Grab will be a better option if you are travelling in a group of 3-4 as costs would be shared.
DIY transfers: Many guesthouses arrange private shuttles or van transfers-just ask when booking.
Aim for December through April to avoid monsoon downpours - early December still sees some rain, but it’s generally clear and cool by mid-winter.
Phong Nha Homestay Palafita: Simple rooms from 350 k VND/night, early check-in available for 50 k VND, plus on-site bike and motorbike rental. We stayed in this Phong Nha homestay for 300k VND and it was the best place we stayed in the whole of Vietnam.
Only con is you will have to rent a motorbike (approx 100k VND) since it's around 6 minutes away from town center, but it’s worth it. Trust me!
Hoan Chau Homestay - Hostel: Dorm beds from 100 k VND, free Wi-Fi and air-con, perfect for solo travelers.
Vu’s Homestay Phong Nha: Private double rooms with pool views from $19/night (≈460 k VND), free breakfast and a chilled garden area.
Phong Nha Ecolodge: Bungalows from $16/night (≈380 k VND) set just outside town in relaxed green surroundings.
Scooter & bike rental: No license required; expect to pay ~100k to 150k VND/day for a scooter or 50 k VND for a bicycle. Some homestays give bicycles on rent for free when you stay with them!
Money & market: ATMs from Sacombank, Agribank and Vietinbank accept international cards. The morning market (6-11 AM, then 2-6 PM) sells fresh produce, snacks and basic gear-always bargain in Vietnamese and carry small bills.
Solo adventurers: English-speaking tour desks abound in town, but DIY trips to Paradise, Dark and Phong Nha caves are straightforward-just flag down a boat or hop on a bike.
Phong Nha Cave: A short boat ride transports you along an underground river to ancient chambers. Entry is ~150 k VND; open 8 AM-4 PM daily.
Paradise Cave (Thiên Đường): Marvel at cathedral-like halls on well-lit wooden walkways. Tickets are 250 k VND; open 7:30 AM-5 PM.
Dark Cave (Hang Tối): Suit up for zip-lining, kayaking and a funky mud bath inside this half-mile grotto-combo tours run ~450 k VND; open 8 AM-5 PM.
Beyond the big three: Day tours often include Elephant Cave, Mada Valley jungle treks or Tra Ang Cave for cheap - all bookable via Jungle Boss website or directly from the office.
Hang Pygmy Cave: A two-day, one-night camping odyssey costs 8 M VND (≈$300) per person, including meals, permits and transport - spots sell out fast from December to mid-September.
Tiger Cave Phong Nha adventure: For the experienced caver, Jungle Boss offers the Tiger cave tour in Phong Nha at 12.5 M VND (≈$480), complete with safety gear and multi-day guides.
Son Doong (World’s Largest Cave): This bucket-list 6-day adventure is roughly $3,000 USD (≈72 M VND) and requires booking months in advance, but few experiences rival its scale except for the mighty Kong Collapse tour!
Son River cruise & kayaking: Glide past limestone karsts on a bamboo boat or paddle yourself; expect to pay ~200 k VND for a guided kayak trip.
Cycle the countryside: Rent a bike and meander through rice paddies, buffalo fields and small villages-it’s one of the most peaceful ways to absorb rural life.
