2. Hoi An to Phong Nha by Train

Hoi An has no train station, so first get to Da Nang (about 30 km) and take the train from there to Dong Hoi, the nearest station to Phong Nha.

Da Nang - Dong Hoi Train

First of all, you will travel to Da Nang, which is about 30 km from Hoi An. Arrive at Da Nang by bus or taxi, several trains depart from Da Nang to Dong Hoi; then you will take a short distance trip by bus or taxi to Phong Nha.

Journey Time: 7-9 hours depending upon the train plus 1-hour transfer from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha.
Price: VND 350,000 – VND 700,000 ($15 - $30), sleeper berth.
Pros: Scenic route, less uncomfortable than buses, space to stretch your legs.
Cons: Multiple transfers; door to door it takes about as long as the bus.

Reservation Tips

Trains in Vietnam can be booked online or at the station. It's recommended to book a sleeper cabin since it will be an overnight journey. When one arrives at Dong Hoi, there are always taxis and local buses available which will take one through to Phong Nha. 3. Private Car or Taxi from Hoi An to Phong Nha

For people who want comfort and flexibility, a private car or taxi would indeed be a very good choice.

Travel Time: 7-8 hrs
Price: VND 3,500,000 – VND 5,000,000 ($150-$220), depending on the season and the class of car.

4. Flight from Da Nang to Dong Hoi

The flight itself is short, but there are no direct flights, and once you add the transfers at both ends it is not quicker than a private car.

There is a domestic flight available from Da Nang International Airport to Dong Hoi Airport, and from Dong Hoi, it takes about an hour to reach Phong Nha.

Journey Time: 1-hour flight, plus 1-hour transfer to Phong Nha.
Price: From VND 1,000,000 – VND 1,500,000 ($40 - $60).
Pros: short flight, comfortable.
Disadvantages: few flights, and the airport transfers at both ends add several hours.

Reservation Tips

It is not as frequent to fly between Da Nang and Dong Hoi, so flights should be booked in advance during high seasons of travel, for sure. Although some airlines-consider Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways-provide services, they are not daily.

Key Stops between Hoi An and Phong Nha

On 1 July 2025 Vietnam reorganised its provinces. Hoi An is now part of Da Nang city, which absorbed Quang Nam province, and Phong Nha is now in Quang Tri, which absorbed Quang Binh.

Nothing about the journey changed. The distance, the road, the train line and the bus operators are the same. You will still see Quang Nam and Quang Binh on older tickets, signs and booking sites, and both places are still called Hoi An and Phong Nha.

It matters for two things: paperwork that asks for a province, and searching, because listings are now split between the old names and the new ones.

Quick answers

What is the fastest way? A private car, at 7 to 8 hours. The flight via Dong Hoi is not faster once you count both airports and the transfer at each end.

Night bus or day bus? The night bus saves you a day and costs the least. It also arrives in Phong Nha before dawn, which is a problem if you have not booked somewhere that will let you in early.

Is the train better than the bus? More comfortable and less flexible. There are only a few services a day and the timetable, not your plan, decides your departure.

Can I stop at Hue on the way? Yes, and it is the one stop that is worth breaking the journey for. Hue sits roughly halfway. That stop is also the spine of central Vietnam in five days, which puts Phong Nha and Hoi An either side of it.

Should I book ahead? In April to August, yes, a few days out. The rest of the year you can usually book the day before.
