If the trip runs north through the centre, Phong Nha is a different sort of day: primary forest and caves you walk into, with the national park capping entries so groups stay small. Our Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley day trek is the shortest of them.

It is 1,000 km north of Saigon, so it is another leg rather than an evening out.
