Ba Chieu Market in Ho Chi Minh City's bustling Binh Thanh District is one of those whirlwind hubs where both tradition and modernity meet face to face. Once one of the iconic local markets of the city, it is the place that offers a real taste of daily Vietnamese life in every single commodity from shopping for fresh produce to enjoying local street food. Everything you need to know before visiting.
Opened in 1942 and then expanded in 1987, Ba Chieu Market measures an area of 8,400 square meters with almost 800 stalls. Comparatively, with the more tourist-oriented Ben Thanh Market, Ba Chieu is oriented towards locals, thus offering more realistic experiences and fewer tourist trappings. Centrally located, it's quite accessible to those who want to tour the city's neighbourhoods.
Diverse range of products
Ba Chieu Market is compartmentalized, with a particular section for each type of product. It's just a goldmine for scoring great deals on everything from cheaper shoes and accessories to fresh fruits and tasty Vietnamese snacks. Meanwhile, the boisterous wet market area itself will be a riot of colorful produce and fresh seafood for your senses.
Local Eats
There are different kinds of street foods in the food stalls at Ba Chieu Market, from banh xeo to bun thịt nuong and sweet Vietnamese desserts, full of flavor and at very cheap prices; hence, this is potentially a tasty adventure for visitors.
One of my personal favorites in the Chieu market was the Vietnamese egg noodles!
Bargaining Culture
Prices at the market are usually marked up for tourists, so it's super important to get your bargaining game on. Just having a friendly chat can really help you score way better prices. Or, you could totally go with a local guide who can help you out with buying stuff.
And do not feel ashamed, bargaining is pretty normal in Vietnam local markets and the sellers already expect that when quoting their prices.
Operating Hours: It opens daily from 5 AM up to 8 PM. It is best if you go very early in the morning when all the noise gets going, and the produce is at its freshest. Plus the weather is pleasant unlike in the afternoon when it can get quite hot!
How to get there: So, Ba Chieu Market is located at Bach Dang Street (google maps link) in Binh Thanh District. It is quite easy to reach both by taxi, motorbike, and even public bus from downtown Ho Chi Minh City.
To Go: Come with cash, because most vendors don't take cards, and wear comfortable shoes to help get you through the active and sometimes crowded aisles.
Unlike other touristy markets, Ba Chieu still retains much of its traditional appeal: a local place to shop for everyday things, and it is just right for those wanting to get close to Vietnamese culture.
Ranging from fashionable clothes to handicraft souvenirs, this is a very cheap market. It is an ideal option for touristic demands in search of local goods at uncontrolled prices.
The colorful stalls, teeming activity, and beaming vendors make Ba Chieu a veritable photographer's haven. Here one captures the essence of Ho Chi Minh City street market culture in frames.
You may also combine other local attractions while in Binh Thanh District, such as the Thanh Da Peninsula or some nearby temples, for a much quieter retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city to complement your market tour.
Thanh Da island is one of the best spots to chill for a while if you are tired of the excessive hustle and bustle of a city like Ho Chi Minh. We personally recommend it!

The price to get there by a Grab taxi or ride-sharing service may cost about 40,000 to 60,000 VND from town. If you are a solo traveler, then a Grab bike is a no-brainer - cheap, fun, quick!
