From super green rainforests to peaceful wetlands, the country’s natural scenery makes it a top spot for biodiversity, which is awesome for birdwatchers and curious travelers. Here’s a little guide to help you check out Vietnam's amazing birdlife.
Its location and further variation in geography create habitats that host a healthy, diverse population of birds, including 19 endemic species: the Vietnamese Greenfinch and the Chestnut-eared Laughingthrush. It's also a seasonal home to a number of migratory species, making any time of year rewarding for birdwatching. Cultural immersion with these nature spots enriches your experience.
Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province
Home to more than 300 bird species, including the Blue-rumped Pitta and the Tonkin Partridge, Vietnam's oldest national park is a must-visit. The best time to visit is between November and April. It has limestone forests with great trails for birding amidst breathtaking sceneries.
Even if you are on a boat tour of Trang An or Tam Coc in Ninh Binh, you will get plenty of opportunities to see rare birds chilling near the river!
Cat Tien National Park (Southern Vietnam)
With over 350 species, Cat Tien is a complete biodiversity hotspot with such attractive birds as Germain's Peacock-Pheasant and colorful kingfishers. If you want the best views, hit up its forests and wetlands from December to May.
Bach Ma National Park - Central Vietnam
With evergreen montane and lowland forests, Bach Ma supports some key endemic species such as Annam Partridge and colorful Collared Laughingthrush. The visit to the site is rewarding anytime from February to July.
Mekong Delta
Tram Chim National Park and Tra Su Forest wetlands provide ideal waterbird haunts and are homes to the endangered Sarus Cranes. A boat trip through the wetlands during the dry season from December through April into the wetland wonderland is an opportunity.
Da Lat Highlands
The weather is just so perfect here to observe some cool birds like the Vietnamese Cutia and Dalat Shrike-Babbler. Local forests around it, like the Ta Nung and Di Linh, are totally a birding spot.
Binoculars: Desire to spot distantly located species.
Field Guides: Books like Birds of Vietnam by Richard Craik have the most helpful identification hints.
Comfortable Clothes: Wear no bright colors so that you can blend with nature.
Camera Accessories: The telephoto lens comes in very handy while clicking great snaps.
Insect Repellent: This is essential in the sticky weather of Vietnam.
The dry season (November to April) is ideal, providing better visibility and easier access to remote areas. Certain species are more active during migration, so consult local guides for timing. Travel in the early morning when birds are pretty active and chirpy!
Hire Local Guides: They have experience in locating the most elusive and rare birds.
Keep it Quiet and Cool: You’re apt to spot far more birds in quiet areas.
Plan Ahead: Research your destination's bird species and any travel requirements.
Respect Nature: Do not disturb birds or their habitat.
The most common birds of Vietnam include the Common Kingfisher, with its startlingly beautiful plumage of bright blues and oranges, generally found near rivers and lakes. The Black Drongo, also known as the "King Crow," which does very well in both savannas and cities, has this lustrous black plumage with its aggressive territorial display.
Other striking species are the melodious singing Chinese Blackbird that is seen at parks and gardens, and the Black Kite soaring admirably and variously distributed. Wetlands have the Eastern Spot-Billed Duck adding color to the avifauna of Vietnam. More typical forest birds are the Great Hornbill and the White-winged Magpie, which have been representative of conservation needs for the threatened habitats of these birds.
Most of the great birding sites, such as the Mekong Delta and Da Lat, are proximate to culturally significant areas. Combine bird-watching with floating market visits, ancient temple trips, or local village visits to give meaning to your journey.
Additionally, Vietnam represents a great combination of biodiversity and accessibility. Whether being an avid birdwatcher or just enjoying nature, cool landscapes, and diverse bird life, there is a good reason for several hundred exciting explorations with photo shoots. Coupled with the vibrant culture and hospitable locals, even your bird-watching tour will be an adventure.
