Are you looking forward to a vacation in Vietnam in 2025? Now, let me tell you about one of those wonders, which is breathtakingly beautiful yet so serene: Bai Dinh Pagoda. This big area, located in the breathtakingly beautiful Ninh Binh province, has been one of the most-visited places of Vietnam by tourists this year.
Bai Dinh Pagoda is the biggest Buddhist temple of Southeast Asia, situated over an area of 700 hectares. It mainly consists of two parts: the old pagoda and the new big temple. The new one was constructed between the years 2003 and 2010, comprising big halls, tranquil gardens, and traditional enclosures. On the other side, the old pagoda gives a glimpse of the rich spiritual history of Vietnam.
It is located about 95 km south of Hanoi and situated along the slope of a limestone mountain covered with green vegetation. The views are pretty stunning and if you are coming by motorbike you are absolutely going to stop every 15 minutes on the way, trust me!
The following are means to get to, among others, from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. Take a fascinating 1-day trip from Ninh Binh that combines religious prayer, cultural exploration, and scenic beauty. It will take about 2 hours of driving from Hanoi.
It will be a short 15-kilometer drive, which you can do by taxi, motorbike, or bicycle. Scenic roads wind through the countryside, dotted with dramatic karst peaks.
The pagoda is open throughout the year; however, visiting during the Tet Holiday will bring up different experiences. It's electric, with colored decorations everywhere, hustling crowds, and religious ceremonies creating a unique experience for visitors.
Following are the details of the main attractions within the complex:
Tam Quan Gate: The great entrance is carved with intricate details.
Arhat Corridor: It is a 3-kilometer hallway lined up with 500 stone statues that are different in expressions and postures.
Phap Chu Hall: It offers a 100-ton bronze Buddha statue, one of the largest in Vietnam.
Bell Tower: A 36-ton bronze bell resonates right across the complex.
Stupa: This 100-meter-high stupa provides panoramic views of its surroundings. Get a good quality camera lens with your DSLR there, you would be surprised at the shots you will get there!
Dress Code: A place of worship is where one should show respect by dressing modestly. Shoulders and knees should be covered.
Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are essential since the area is huge and there is lots to cover.
Water: Take water along when going, especially in those hot months.
Guided Tours: It is recommended that one should book a local guide or take a tour to better understand the history behind it and the importance of the site.
Personally if you ask me, I would say just do a self-guided tour as you would find most of the important details in this blog.
When one goes to Ninh Binh, he or she cannot afford to miss the following places:
Trang An Grottoes: A watery maze of limestone grottos that go past several peaks of karsts, catching glimpses of hidden temples — just what nature has come up with.
It offers one of the best boat tours of Vietnam!
Mua Cave: The 500 steps leading to the top offer a stunning, panoramic view of the area surrounding Tam Coc. You can do a hiking tour of Mua Cave which can be done in 2 hours for reaching the top and coming back easily.
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital: These are remains of the ancient capital of Vietnam during the 10th and 11th centuries (Google maps link)
