Distance between Ninh Binh and Phong Nha
The distance between the two is approximately 400 kilometers. Below are some of the ways of getting to and from each other according to your preference depending on speed, comfort, and the budget. These include:
1. By Sleeper Bus (most convenient)
Duration: 7 to 9 hours
Price: $13-16 (338.000-376.000 VND)
Info: Most of these buses have an overnight service. Most of these buses include reclining chairs, and some have snacks. Most of the buses mentioned above leave from Tam Coc or the town of Ninh Binh and arrive in the morning to reach Phong Nha.
2. Train + Bus (Scenic Option)
Duration: 10–12 hours inclusive of transfers
Price: $10–$40
Information: From Ninh Binh, take the train to Dong Hoi, then take a 1.5-hour bus or taxi to reach Phong Nha. The trains are softer because one is able to enjoy sleeper cabins. If you are like us who sleeps extra deep due to the hum of the train, you would love this option!
3. Private Car or Taxi
Duration: 7–8 hours
Cost: From $370
Information: A private transfer gives the flexibility and comfort needed—especially in the case of group travels or people with much luggage.
4. Bus + Flight (Fastest)
Duration: 7–8 hours
Cost: $40–$100
Information: First, get to Noi Bai Airport from Ninh Binh—2.5 hours by taxi or bus—then fly to Dong Hoi, with a further 1-hour transfer to Phong Nha. Of course, it is a bit quicker but also costlier.
The trip from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha is much more than transferring—it's about exploring Vietnam in all of its cultural and historical manifestations.
