Vietnam from New Zealand: Flights, E-visa and When to Go

There are no non-stop flights from New Zealand to Vietnam, so plan on one connection and about 14 to 16 hours from Auckland to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. New Zealand passport holders need a Vietnamese e-visa before they fly: US$25, applied for online, valid for up to 90 days. Vietnam runs five hours behind New Zealand in our winter and six in summer.

The good news is the seasons. The dry months in central Vietnam, where the big caves are, line up with New Zealand's winter and the July school holidays. That is the trip this guide is built around.

Do New Zealanders need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. Vietnam gives visa-free entry to a list of mostly European passports, and New Zealand is not on it. Neither is Australia. People who have walked into Bali or Thailand on a stamp are caught out by this every year, usually at the check-in desk in Auckland, where the airline will not board you without the approval.

• What to get: the government e-visa, single or multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days.
• Cost: US$25 single entry, US$50 multiple entry, about NZ$42 and NZ$85.
• How long it takes: usually three to seven working days. Apply two weeks out, not two days.
• The exception: Phu Quoc island in the far south lets any nationality stay 30 days without a visa, as long as you fly straight there and do not leave the island.

Flights from New Zealand to Vietnam

Auckland has no scheduled non-stop service to Vietnam, so every itinerary connects once. The quickest go through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, at about 14 to 15 hours in total. Hong Kong, Taipei, Sydney and Melbourne work too, and are sometimes cheaper. Air New Zealand sells Vietnam through partner airlines rather than on its own aircraft.

• From Auckland: into Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Da Nang, one stop.
• From Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown: add a domestic leg to Auckland, or fly to Sydney or Brisbane and connect there.
• Fares: in September 2026 we saw economy returns from Auckland to Ho Chi Minh City from about NZ$1,200 for March travel. School holidays push that up.

For central Vietnam, fly into Hanoi or Da Nang and take the domestic hop to Dong Hoi, which is 45 minutes by road from Phong Nha. The overnight train from Hanoi is the slower, cheaper alternative.

From Waitomo to Phong Nha

A lot of New Zealanders have already been caving without calling it that. A boat ride under the glowworms at Waitomo, lit by an insect found nowhere else on earth, is how many people find out they like being underground. Phong Nha is that interest at a different scale. The largest cave passage in the world, Son Doong, is here, and so is Hang Pygmy, counted among the four largest.

Prices below are in dong with the New Zealand dollar equivalent at about 14,900 dong to the dollar.

• One day. The Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley trek is a day of jungle walking with a lake swim, 1,950,000 dong, about NZ$130.
• One night underground. Hang Pygmy is two days and one night, camping at the cave, 7,900,000 dong, about NZ$530.
• The big one. Kong Collapse is five days and four nights with a maximum of ten people, including a 100 metre abseil into one of the deepest sinkholes in the park, 35,000,000 dong, about NZ$2,350. Read the Kong Collapse safety process before you book it.

What things cost in New Zealand dollars

Day to day, Vietnam is cheap by New Zealand standards. A bowl of pho from a neighbourhood shop is 26,000 to 52,000 dong, NZ$1.75 to NZ$3.50. A Grab ride across central Hanoi is usually under NZ$5. In Phong Nha a homestay starts around 150,000 dong, about NZ$10, and a comfortable private room runs NZ$25 to NZ$50 a night. The flights and any multi-day expedition are the real costs, and for most people from New Zealand the flight is the bigger of the two.

Take a card with no foreign transaction fee and some cash. Card acceptance is good in the cities and patchy in the countryside.

Moving to New Zealand first? Your Vietnam visa does not change

Some of the people planning this trip are new to New Zealand, or about to be. Residence in New Zealand does not change what you need for Vietnam: the visa depends on the passport you travel on, not where you live. An American or Chinese passport holder living in Auckland applies as an American or Chinese citizen.

New Zealand's investor route has become a common way in. The Active Investor Plus visa asks for NZD 5 million invested for three years with 21 days spent in the country, or NZD 10 million over five years with 105 days. Immigration New Zealand had received 904 applications by 2 September 2026, with the United States the largest source. The low number of days is why many holders keep travelling as before, and it is the kind of residence that fits long trips around the region.
