Sapa weather is cool all year because the town sits at 1,570 metres. Average highs run from 12°C in January to 23°C in July, and January nights average 6°C. The best months to walk are March, April, October and November. Summer brings green rice and heavy rain, with 461 mm in July alone.

Two things most month-by-month lists get wrong. Fog in Sapa is a winter problem: the town's station logs 17 fog days in January and one in July. And the sunniest month is April, not October.

Source: QCVN 02:2022/BXD climate tables, Sa Pa station. The year adds up to 2,780 mm of rain, 228 rain days and 108 fog days.

The averages hide the cold snaps. The lowest temperatures the same tables record for Sa Pa are -4.2°C in January, -3.2°C in December and -3.5°C in March. That March figure surprises people who pack for spring. The highest is 29.6°C.

For scale, Hanoi's average July high is 33.4°C. Sapa's is 23°C. Summer nights at 18°C still need a long sleeve.

Sapa weather: the best time to visit, by what you want

Walking in comfort: March, April, October and November. Highs of 16 to 21°C, and rain well below the summer peak.

Distant views: April. It has the most sunshine of the year, 168 hours, and fewer fog days than any month from December to March. It is also when thunderstorms peak, with about 12 storm days, so mornings are the time for viewpoints.

Golden rice: the last two weeks of September into early October. By mid-October many fields are stubble.

Green rice: June to August, if you accept the mud.

October deserves an honest note. It is drier than September, with 201 mm against 303, but it is also the dullest month on the station record, at 94 hours of sunshine. Drier does not mean brighter.

The best things to do in Sapa split neatly into fine-weather and bad-weather days. Plan the valley walk for the clearest forecast and keep the market and the town for the rest.

Rice terrace colour by month

The photographs online come from two short windows. This is the usual cycle in the Muong Hoa valley, and it shifts by a week or two between years and villages.

MonthsWhat the fields look like
Mid-October to MarchCut stubble, then bare brown earth. The terrace lines show well in low winter sun
April and MayFlooded for planting. Water reflects the sky on still mornings
June to AugustBright green, growing rice
Late September to early OctoberYellow to gold, then harvest

If colour is the reason for the trip, ask the homestay for a photo taken that week. "Harvest season" in a listing can mean fields already cut. Stay on the paths: the terrace walls are earth. A 2-day Sapa homestay trek with a night in Ta Van puts you in the valley at both ends of the day, when the light on the terraces is best.

Sapa weather in December, January and February

Cold, grey and damp. January averages 6°C at night, 17 fog days and 14 days of drizzle. Two days inside a cloud can end with a clear morning and every ridge sharp.

Ask before booking whether the room has a real heater and somewhere to dry boots. An electric blanket warms the bed. It does not dry a jacket by morning.

Snow is a news story, not a season. On 24 January 2016 snow settled on the roads and vegetable beds of Sa Pa town, and more than 10,000 visitors came up that day to see it. The guide to snow in Vietnam covers where it falls and how often. Do not build a trip around it.

Summer is mud season

June, July and August bring 381, 461 and 452 mm of rain. The wettest single day in the station tables is 336 mm, in June. That is more than four months of winter rain in one day.

The rain tends to come in heavy bursts, so a morning walk often works. The problem is what it leaves. Clay paths turn to grease, and the descent is where people fall. Wear shoes with real tread and ask the guide for a route with a road pickup halfway.

Storms can stop everything. In September 2024, Typhoon Yagi's rain blocked roads across Lao Cai province with landslides and Sapa guides suspended trekking. Never cross a swollen stream to keep to a schedule, and leave a spare day between Sapa and an international flight from June to September.

Fog on Fansipan is a separate forecast

The summit is 3,147.3 metres, about 1,580 metres above the town. Air cools by roughly 6.5°C per 1,000 metres of height, so the top runs about 10°C colder than Sapa. A 6°C January night in town is around -4°C up there.

Cloud often sits on the peak when the town is clear. Other days the cable car climbs out of the fog into sun. The Fansipan cable car guide has tickets and the walk from the top station. Take the first cabin; mornings are clearer and quieter.

The cable car shut for periodic maintenance in 2026 and reopened on 28 September 2026. Boarding then ran 8:00 to 14:30 on weekdays, later on Fridays and from 7:30 at weekends, and weather can change it.

Sapa weather now: picking the right forecast

Search "Sapa" in a weather app for Sapa Vietnam weather and you may get a Sapa in the Philippines or North Korea. Choose Sa Pa, Lao Cai, Vietnam, and check the map pin. Lao Cai city is no substitute. It is 35 km away, an hour by road, in a hot valley far below.

Night trains reach Lao Cai about eight hours after leaving Hanoi, early enough for a cold wait before check-in in winter. The Hanoi to Sapa transport guide compares trains and buses.

When Sapa is wet, Phong Nha is dry

Northern mountains and central Vietnam run opposite rain calendars, so a summer trip can pair wet Sapa with dry caves. In July, Sapa gets 461 mm over 26 days. Dong Hoi, the coastal city where most Phong Nha visitors arrive, gets 76 mm over seven. The central coast takes its rain later, with 649 mm at Dong Hoi in October.

If only one northern side trip fits, Sapa or Halong Bay weighs them up.

In Phong Nha's cave country, our Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley day trek runs all year, takes groups up to 60, and can be joined as a single traveller. It is VND 1,950,000, about US$75.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is the best month for Sapa weather?

April for views, with 168 hours of sunshine and about 21°C by day. March, October and November are also good walking months. For golden rice, go in late September or the first days of October and accept more rain. Skip July and August if the walk matters more than green fields.
02

Does Sapa Vietnam have snow?

Rarely. Snow in the town makes national news, as it did on 24 January 2016. Frost on Fansipan and the higher ridges is much more common from December to February, when the summit can drop below -4°C. Pack for cold and wet, not for snow, and treat a white morning as luck rather than a plan.
03

Is Sapa too wet in July and August?

Wet, but not impossible. July averages 461 mm over 26 rain days, mostly in heavy bursts. Walk in the morning, choose shorter routes with a road pickup, and wear shoes with deep tread. Keep a spare day before any flight, because landslides can close the mountain roads after a big storm.
04

How cold is Sapa in December?

Average highs of about 13°C and lows of 7°C, with 13 fog days and drizzle. The station has recorded -3.2°C in December. Bring a fleece or down layer, a waterproof shell and gloves. Damp air makes evenings feel colder than the number.
05

Will Fansipan be clear if Sapa is sunny?

Not necessarily. The summit is about 1,580 metres higher and often sits in its own cloud, and some days the cable car rises above fog that covers the town. Take the first cabin for the best chance of a view, and carry a warm layer.
