What 3 Days in Phong Nha Costs: Tours, Beds and Food

Three days in Phong Nha costs about 1.6 million dong per person travelling cheaply, roughly 60 US dollars, or about 6.3 million, roughly 240 dollars, with a guided cave day and a private room. Beds are 50,000 to 750,000 dong a night, cave tickets 80,000 to 450,000, and a guided day tour 1,950,000. Getting there from Dong Hoi is 35,000 dong on the local bus or 500,000 in a taxi. The single biggest variable is not accommodation and it is not food. It is whether you do a guided tour, which can cost more than everything else combined.

What it costs to reach Phong Nha

Almost everyone arrives through Dong Hoi, 45 minutes away by road.

One thing to know before you land: there is no public bus from Dong Hoi airport. No stop, no shuttle, no connection. If you arrive by air you are taking a taxi or a pre-arranged pickup, so budget for it rather than being surprised at arrivals.

The train is the cheapest comfortable way into the region.

Getting to Dong Hoi in the first place costs 250,000 to 650,000 dong on an overnight sleeper bus from Hanoi, or 9.5 to 10.5 hours on the train. Getting to Phong Nha covers every route into the park.

Eating in Phong Nha on any budget

A local meal runs 25,000 to 70,000 dong. A dish in a tourist-facing restaurant runs 50,000 to 200,000. A bag of crisps is 5,000. Eating three times a day costs 100,000 to 250,000 dong depending entirely on which side of that line you eat.

Guided prices look high next to a show cave ticket because they are not the same product. A guide, a safety team, porters and lunch are inside that number. A ticket buys you a boardwalk.

Beware the cheapest number on any operator's list. Some low-priced tours are private departures with a minimum group size, which is no use to one or two people. This is where the real comparison happens, because a 1,950,000 dong tour that feeds you is not the same product as a cheaper one that does not.

The B4 runs hourly from Dong Hoi city for 35,000 dong, though not from the airport.

Two things do not move. Entrance fees are fixed by the province all year. Guided tour prices are fixed too, because the cost is guides, porters and safety staff rather than beds, so there is no low season on a tour.

One attraction does change: the Dark Cave package drops from 450,000 dong to roughly 250,000 to 270,000 once the water activities close for the season, which is cheaper and also a smaller day out.

On the tours themselves, Jungle Boss closes only three across September, October and November, Bach Ma Discovery and the two Do Quyen Waterfall trips, reopening them on 1 December. Everything else runs year-round, so a wet-season trip narrows your choice far less than most weather pages suggest.
