Why Visit Fansipan Mountain?

The view from Fansipan is amazing, including green forests, rocky peaks, and meadows on the mountains. On a fine day, the terracing of the rice fields in Muong Hoa Valley presents a stunning sight from its peak. It was surreal and ever-changing with this cool combination of mist and sun.

Roof of Indochina or better known as Fansipan mountain offers some cool ethnic minority groups of Hmong and Dao so that one may plunge into their customs, taste local food, and imbue themselves with the friendly atmosphere of the hill tribe communities of Sapa.

Right at the top of Fansipan (top of Indochina!) are some notable spiritual sites: the Great Buddha Statue (it's the largest Buddha statue of Vietnam) and Bich Van Zen Monastery.

For the more adventurous traveler, trekking up Fansipan is again the most rewarding method. If you want to avoid that tourist trap feeling, we highly recommend you hike the Sapa mountain like we did. The weather is favourable compared to the rest of Vietnam though it can get quite cold in peak winter.
Common routes are:

Hiking to Reach Fansipan Mountain Is Way More Fun Than Going by Cable Car (Roof of Indochina)

    • Tram Ton Pass Route: A moderate two-day trek with gradual ascents and scenic campsites.

    • Sin Chai Village Route: A one-day, strenuous hike favored by fit trekkers seeking a rapid summit. It can be exhausting so plan accordingly!

    • Cat Cat Village Route: A three-day expedition showcasing waterfalls, rice terraces, and remote hill-tribe villages.
Guides are required to do trekking, and these can be arranged in Sapa. Yes we know they can be quite pushy but if you just have a bit of patience, you would have a good time. Try to find authentic guides which your homestay/hotel can easily arrange. Confirm the price twice with them to avoid issues later.

Just note that all over the route you will find locals peddlers who would try to sell you Vietnamese souvenirs at 2x to 5x the price. You can move on and buy it cheaper away from tourist hot spots or if you really want, just bargain which is acceptable. Just try to get a basic idea of prices of souvenirs in Sapa or the rest of Vietnam so you can gauge the true price of an item.
