When to book a Vietnam cave tour and how late is too late

Day tours in Phong Nha you can usually book the same week, sometimes the day before. Overnight cave trips want two to four weeks in high season. Expeditions of three to five days want one to three months, because they run two or three days a week with ten to thirty places. Son Doong is different: about 1,000 people a year get in, and as of 31 March 2026 the Vietnamese press reported 2026 and 2027 both sold out, with 2028 dates being released.

Vietnam Caves Tours

Vietnam cave tour prices below are from the Jungle Boss tour pages on 27 August 2026. Packages are all-in: guides and safety team, porters, gear, meals, permits and insurance, so the figure is what you pay.

Every Jungle Boss tour is sold "on request". You submit a date, Jungle Boss confirms the place exists, and only then does payment come into it. A date on the website is not a seat held for you.

Why Vietnam cave tours sell out differently

Three things stack up, and none behave like a hotel.

Permits cap the numbers. Cave routes around Phong Nha Ke Bang are licensed to specific operators, and the licence sets who can go where. Son Doong is the extreme case: one company, roughly 1,000 people a year. Jungle Boss runs its own permitted routes, which is why you cannot buy a Kong Collapse place from a third party the way you can buy a Ha Long cruise from thirty agents.

The season is short for some caves, and closed outright for others. Water levels decide. Oxalis states plainly that "from September 15 to November 15 water caves and low-lying caves will be closed due to the risk of flooding". Son Doong runs January to the end of August. That is not a recommendation, it is the operating calendar.

Group sizes are tiny. Kong Collapse takes up to ten people on a Tuesday or a Friday. Do Quyen takes twelve. On a ten-person departure, two friends dropping out is twenty percent of the trip.

Son Doong, and why it is a year not a month

Jungle Boss does not operate Son Doong. One company does, Oxalis Adventure, and they hold the sole licence. Nobody else can sell you a place, and any operator implying otherwise is reselling at a markup or misleading you. Oxalis lists the Son Doong cave tour price at USD 3,000 per person, runs it January to the end of August, takes ten customers per departure, and limits it to ages 18 to 70. You also need an overnight trek in the last twelve months covering 8 km a day with 1,000 m of elevation change.

The booking horizon is the part people underestimate. Vietnamese media reported on 31 March 2026 that all roughly 1,000 places for 2026 had gone early and 2027 was full too, after the CBS 60 Minutes segment aired. Oxalis has since begun releasing 2028 dates. So the answer to "how far in advance to book Son Doong" is: watch for the year to open, and book the week it does. The season decides more than the calendar

Central Vietnam has a dry season from April to August and a rainy season from September to March. Jungle Boss tour pages name April and May as the best conditions: dry trails, cool air, rivers you can swim rather than fight.

What closes, and when:

• Water caves and low-lying caves in the Tu Lan area: closed 15 September to 15 November. High, dry routes keep running.
• Hang En: December to mid-September, so closed roughly mid-September through November.
• Son Doong: January to the end of August.
• Jungle Boss cave routes: no fixed closure, but itineraries change with the water. On Tiger Cave, cave swimming can become trekking from September to November.

What happens if you book late

Realistically, this is most people. You are in Hue, you have three days spare, and you pick Phong Nha in the taxi.

What tends to still have space, in order of likelihood. Day tours, almost always: the Tra Ang Excursion at VND 800,000 and the Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley jungle trek at VND 1,950,000 both run daily, and Elephant Cave holds up to 60. Then the Victory Cave Expedition 2D1N and Hung Thoong Exploration 3D2N, both daily, so a single free place inside a week is plausible. Hang Pygmy Exploration runs four days a week and Tiger Cave Series three, so your odds depend on which day you walk in.

What rarely has space is Kong Collapse. Ten people, two departures a week, a medical review before you are confirmed. Even if a place exists, the paperwork is not same-day.

Three things that actually work:

1. Email a date range, not a date. "Any departure between the 8th and the 14th" gets a real answer. A single date gets a yes or a no.
2. Ask to be told about cancellations. Multi-day tours are fully refundable up to seven days out, so places genuinely reappear at the seven-day mark. Be on the list by then.
3. Book the day tour now, ask about the expedition second. Day tours refund 100 percent if you cancel three or more days ahead, so you lose nothing.

Deposits, changes and cancellations

Payment. "From the date of receiving the confirmation email, customers are kindly requested to make a deposit or full payment within 03 days to confirm the booking." Miss that and the booking cancels automatically. The policy does not fix a deposit percentage, so confirm the amount in your booking email.

Refunds on 1-day tours. Three or more days before: 100 percent. At 24 hours: 50 percent. Inside 24 hours: nothing.

Refunds on tours of 2 days or more. Seven or more days before: 100 percent. Three to seven days: 50 percent. Inside three days: nothing.

Moving your dates. Changes are allowed if you ask three or more days ahead on a day tour, or seven or more days ahead on a multi-day tour, subject to availability. In peak months, availability binds first, not the notice period.

How to do it. "Cancellation and service change requests will only be accepted via email or message sent to Jungle Boss Tours' contact address." A phone call is not a cancellation.

Weather and force majeure. Weather cancellations get a free reschedule, an alternative tour with the price adjusted, or a full refund. Force majeure returns 100 percent of the tour price, with no liability for your other costs.

Son Doong runs on different terms, being a different company. Cancel 90 or more days out and you lose a VND 7,000,000 processing fee. Inside 45 days you lose the lot. Payment is due within 24 hours of instructions.

Booking checklist

• Passport details exactly as printed, since tours are insured per named person.
• Insurance covering caving, abseiling and trekking. Standard policies often exclude rope work. Check the wording, not the summary.
• Age limits. From 9 for Elephant Cave and Victory Cave, 12 for Do Quyen, 15 for Hang Pygmy and Tiger Cave, 16 for Hung Thoong and Kong Collapse, 18 to 70 for Son Doong.
• Fitness and health. Kong Collapse requires a health statement, a medical review and a signed release of liability before departure. Do not leave that to the last week.
