Ban Gioc Waterfall sits on the Vietnam and China border in Cao Bang province, about 270 km north of Hanoi. It drops roughly 30 metres in several tiers, entry is 45,000 dong (about 1.70 US dollars) and a bamboo raft to the spray is 50,000 to 100,000 dong. Most people get there from Cao Bang city, 85 km and about two hours away by car. Prices checked October 2026.

No border permit is needed for the falls themselves any more, swimming is not allowed, and you cannot cross to the Chinese side. Those three facts answer most of what people ask before they go.

How far is Ban Gioc Waterfall from Hanoi

The road distance is about 270 km to the falls, but there is no fast way to cover it. The usual plan is an overnight or day bus from Hanoi to Cao Bang city, a night there, and then the last 85 km by local bus, car or motorbike.

The local buses from Cao Bang leave from the bus station near the market, about ten a day, with the first around 05:30 and the last around 14:00 or 15:00. They stop constantly. If you take the last one out you will not get back the same day, so either leave early or book a homestay near the falls. A direct night bus from Hanoi to the falls area exists, but timetables change and we could only confirm it from one source, so check at My Dinh before relying on it.

Coming from the west is the other common way in. Riders finishing the Ha Giang loop often carry on east, and our Ha Giang to Cao Bang travel guide covers that road day by day. If you have not started yet, the Hanoi to Ha Giang bus guide is the first leg.

Cao Bang to Ban Gioc Waterfall by road

The road east from Cao Bang runs through Trung Khanh district and over the Khau Coc Cha Pass, a set of tight switchbacks that is the slowest part of the drive. Fog sits on it on winter mornings, and after dark it is no place for a rider who has not done mountain roads before. Allow a full day for the return trip if you want time at the falls and at Nguom Ngao Cave on the way.

Renting a motorbike in Cao Bang is easy, but licence checks in the northern border provinces have tightened. Shops have started asking for an International Driving Permit, and police stops on the loop are not rare.

Bring cash. The ticket kiosk does not take cards, so draw dong in Cao Bang city before you set off. Raft prices vary because sources from 2025 and 2026 quote both 50,000 and 100,000 dong, and the ride lasts 10 to 20 minutes. It takes you close enough to the main drop to get soaked, so put your phone in a dry bag.

Do you need a border permit for Ban Gioc

Not for the falls. Foreign visitors used to need a border area permit, and older guides still say so. In 2025 and 2026 the ticket kiosk sells to anyone who turns up, without documents. Carry your passport anyway, because the falls sit inside a border zone and a police check is possible.

One trap catches loop riders. A border permit bought in Ha Giang does not cover Cao Bang. If you plan to ride smaller roads close to the frontier, such as around Nguyen Binh, ask your guesthouse whether a Cao Bang permit is needed for that stretch.

Can you swim at Ban Gioc Waterfall

No. Swimming is banned in the pool below the falls, and the river is the international border, so staff enforce it. If you want a waterfall you can get into, the river upstream has quieter shallows, but ask locally first. In the north, Du Gia waterfall in Ha Giang is the usual swimming stop on a loop.

The China side: Detian Falls

The Quay Son River forms the border, and China calls its half Detian Falls. From the rafts you can wave at boats on the Chinese side, which run from Daxin county in Guangxi. You cannot cross. Chinese tour groups have at times been allowed onto the Vietnamese bank under a pilot scheme, but there is no crossing open to foreign tourists in the other direction. Seeing both sides means a separate trip through China with a Chinese visa.

Most people find the Vietnamese view better anyway, because it faces the widest section of the falls head on.

Best time to visit Ban Gioc Waterfall

The falls change a lot through the year. Full water and green fields need the rains, but the rains also bring landslides on the pass.

MonthsWaterWhat to expect
June to AugustHighestBrown, powerful water, the two falls can merge into one; rain and landslide risk on the roads
September to OctoberHighThe best balance: clearer water, golden rice fields around harvest, drier roads
November to FebruaryLowCold, fog on the passes, thinner falls; quiet
March to MayLowestDry roads, but the falls can look sparse until the upstream dam releases water

In the dry months the flow depends on a hydropower dam upstream. The release usually comes between about 10:30 and 13:00, which is the window to aim for from February to April. In September, arrive before 09:00 or after 15:00 if you can, because tour buses from Hanoi pack the viewing platform at midday. For the national picture, the best time to visit Vietnam by region sets these months against the rest of the country.

What else to see near Ban Gioc

Nguom Ngao Cave

A short drive back towards Cao Bang, Nguom Ngao has a lit route of about 1 km through formations to a chamber at the end. It takes 45 minutes to an hour. A guide is only needed if you want the unlit sections beyond it.

Pac Bo and the Cao Bang loop

The falls are usually one day of a two to four day circuit of the province. The other big stop is Pac Bo, the cave where Ho Chi Minh lived on his return to Vietnam in 1941, about 50 km northwest of Cao Bang city. Our Pac Bo historic site guide covers getting there and what is open. The whole area is part of the Non Nuoc Cao Bang geopark, which UNESCO listed as a Global Geopark in 2018.

Is Ban Gioc worth the trip

It is if you are already in the north with three days spare, or riding the Ha Giang loop and willing to add two days. As a single trip out of Hanoi it is a lot of road for one waterfall. Two days and one night is the minimum, and most people who try it as a day trip regret it. The honest downsides: the midday crowds, the touts at the car park, and a pass that makes some passengers carsick.

The Vietnam Coracle Ban Gioc guide has a good map of the back roads for anyone riding.

Adding caves in central Vietnam

If the karst country of Cao Bang appeals, the bigger version of it is in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, an overnight bus or train south of Hanoi. The Hanoi to Phong Nha travel guide compares the routes. Our day treks and overnight cave trips there run through the autumn rains, apart from Bach Ma and Do Quyen, which close September to November and reopen on 1 December. The Vietnam rainy season guide explains why the north and centre get their rain in different months.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

How far is Ban Gioc Waterfall from Hanoi?

About 270 km by road. Most people take a sleeper bus from My Dinh to Cao Bang city, 6 to 8 hours for 200,000 to 400,000 dong, then cover the last 85 km by local bus, car or motorbike. Plan on two days and one night at the least.
02

Can you swim in Ban Gioc Waterfall?

No. Swimming is banned in the pool under the falls because the river is the border with China and the current near the drop is strong. You can get close on a bamboo raft for 50,000 to 100,000 dong a person, and you will get wet.
03

Do I need a permit to visit Ban Gioc Waterfall?

Not for the falls, as of 2026. The ticket kiosk sells entry to foreigners without documents. Carry your passport for police checks, and note that a Ha Giang border permit does not cover Cao Bang if you plan to ride remote frontier roads.
04

What is the best month to visit Ban Gioc Waterfall?

September and October. The water is still high after the summer rains, the rice around the falls is ripening, and the roads are drier than in July or August. In the dry season, aim for the dam release between about 10:30 and 13:00.
05

Can you visit the Chinese side of Ban Gioc?

Not from Vietnam. The Chinese half, Detian Falls, is reached through Guangxi with a Chinese visa, and there is no crossing open to foreign tourists at the falls. From the rafts you can see and wave at boats on the Chinese side.
06

How much is the Ban Gioc Waterfall entrance fee?

45,000 dong for adults, about 1.70 US dollars, 20,000 dong for children between 1 and 1.3 metres tall, and free under 1 metre. Bring cash, as the kiosk does not take cards. Nearby Nguom Ngao Cave also costs 45,000 dong.
07

Can you do Ban Gioc as a day trip from Cao Bang?

Yes. Leave Cao Bang by 07:00, stop at Nguom Ngao Cave on the way, and you have three hours at the falls with daylight left for the pass. On the local bus, take an early departure, because the last return leaves mid afternoon.
