When I first rode my scooter out to Ong Lang Beach on Phu Quoc Island, I felt like I had found a little slice of paradise. Soft golden sand, crystal-clear shallow water, and hardly another tourist in sight. That’s what Ong Lang is all about: less touristy and stunning sunsets.
It’s only a short 7 km ride northwest of Duong Dong (the main town), easily reachable by Grab (Uber of Southeast Asia) or scooter. People call it the “sunset beach of the west coast”.
Ong Lang Beach is on the northwest coast of Phu Quoc. Most visitors stay in Duong Dong town or near Long Beach; from either, the beach is only about 15-20 minutes away. You can:
Taxi/Scooter: From Duong Dong center, hop in a taxi (about 100-150k VND, roughly USD 4-7) or rent a scooter for even less. The trip is short and the roads are decent.
Bike: For the adventurous, cycling is fun - you’ll pass small villages and rice paddies before arriving. Just note it can be hot; bring water.
Shuttle: A few hotels and beach clubs (like Mango Bay) offer shuttle services at fixed times.
If you’re coming straight from Phu Quoc Airport (PVG), it’s about a 20 km ride south, or take a shared minivan to Duong Dong and grab a taxi from there.
Ong Lang Beach Is One of the Least Crowded Beach in Vietnam Given How Beautiful It Is
Just do nothing: Really just sit/lie down in a beach shack and just relax! Unlike the crowded Long Beach, Ong Lang is peaceful. The sand is silky and shallow - perfect for wading or trying paddleboard rentals. We went early and had the shore almost to ourselves. For the next several hours, it felt like our private beach.
Snorkelling Near the Beach
Snorkeling and Kayaking: The water is clear and calm, great for a quick snorkel. On calmer days, local vendors rent gear (about 50k VND/day) or kayaks (~150k VND/hour). We paddled around small rocky coves looking for fish.
If you prefer to stay on land, simply lounging in a beach chair with a fruit shake was equally blissful.
Sun Setting on the Horizon in Phu Quoc
Sunset Views: Turn your beach loungers west and enjoy one of the best sunsets on Phu Quoc. The sky often bursts into pink and orange.
Tip: arrive a bit early to secure a good spot, perhaps near the rocky outcrop on one side of the beach.
Mango Bay Resort Deck View
Mango Bay Resort: This eco-friendly resort/bookshop is right on Ong Lang. Even if you’re not staying there, their beachfront bar/restaurant is great for a drink. They sometimes host acoustic music nights under the palm trees.
Tip: their open-air yoga platform has a fabulous sunrise or sunset view.
View From the Ground of Sun World Hon Thom Cable Car
Nearby Stops: If you have a car or scooter, the famous Sun World Hon Thom cable car station is ~5 km south (photo op!), and the Grand World shopping complex is about 10 km southeast if you want souvenirs.
Back in Duong Dong, treat yourself to a seafood dinner at a harbor-front restaurant (100k+ VND per dish), or explore the night market.
Best Time to Visit: November through April is the dry season - sunny, calm seas, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. During May-October (rainy season), the beach is emptier and cheaper, but occasional downpours can roll in.
We were there in late November and got lots of sunshine with a cooling breeze.
Opening & Fees: Ong Lang Beach is public and free to access. There’s no entrance fee or gate.
Feel free to walk along the whole stretch (about 2 km long). The only charges come if you rent chairs or equipment from vendors (negotiate a price).
Amenities: Facilities are limited compared to Long Beach. There are no proper bathrooms on the sand - just the makeshift kind at beachfront bars or clubs.
We recommend using the one at Mango Bay or any cafe. Bring your own beach towel for cleanliness, and plenty of water.
Several beachfront restaurants (like Mai Jo, Camia, and Papa’s Kitchen) offer Western and Vietnamese food; try a coconut iced coffee or fresh seafood at sunset.
My personal favorite is Mai Jo restaurant and I am not alone since it has over 1300 google reviews with avg. rating of 4.7 stars!
Weather Cautions: In midday sun, it can get very hot. Umbrella and mosquito spray are wise.
Also, on windy days (especially mid-year) the waves can pick up. Look out for locally posted flags or ask if it’s safe to swim.
Perfect Time for Jogging on the Beach Is Around Sunset
Morning Swim (8-10 AM): Arrive at sunrise to beat any heat. Dip in the clear water or rent a kayak. Have breakfast at a seaside café (fresh fruit smoothies are a Phu Quoc staple).
Midday Relax (10 AM-2 PM): Walk the length of the beach (great for photos).
Chill in a hammock or lounge chair under a palapa. Grab lunch at Camia Restaurant (they’re known for good pizza and cocktails).
Afternoon Adventure (2-4 PM): Take a short drive to explore nearby. For example, head south to Vung Bau Beach (a sheltered cove 10 minutes away) or check out the flower fields at Vuon Quoc (the Orchid and pepper farms).
Try snorkeling or SUP.
Sunset (4:30-6:30 PM): Return to Ong Lang and set up camp on the west side. Order a seafood platter (pineapple grilled rice, anyone?).
Capture the amazing sky colors with your own eyes or maybe a camera for your instagram!
Evening: If you’re up for nightlife, drive into Duong Dong for the night market and night seafood grill. If not, head back to your hotel for an early night - the beach days on Phu Quoc can be surprisingly tiring!
