This little island presents you with the other Hanoi that you never knew existed and so do most people who follow the popular northern Vietnam itinerary.
Banana Island, a tropical gem located in the heart of the Red River close to Hanoi, is indeed a veritable garden paradise for farming. Towering banana plantations, as the name would suggest, bestow the island with its unique name. And, even though the island lies close to the busy heart of the city, the island has a peaceful and calm atmosphere, providing a relaxing respite from the cacophony and bustle of the city life. The dense forests, combined with the warm and affable attitude of the inhabitants, make for an unbeatable experience for those who desire to immerse themselves in the soul of Hanoi.
Banana Island has remained untouched by the development of Hanoi throughout the years. It remains as the last trace of the farming days that the city had, demonstrating the ancient farming techniques that sustained the inhabitants for many years. The serene life on the island, as the city develops rapidly, reminds us not to be too aggressive with nature and progress.
Banana Island offers diverse activities for all traveler types. Cycle through scenic banana plantations, walk quiet nature trails, photograph stunning Red River sunsets, or simply relax with a picnic by the river. Whether you want adventure or tranquility, you'll find it here.
Cycling alongside the farms
The best way to tour the island is on a bicycle. The pleasant roads pass through big banana plantations and vegetable plantations, and so it is a peaceful and wonderful place to bike through. Biking through the area gives the visitors a feeling of the peacefulness of the island, which becomes a welcome respite from the streets' hustle and bustle in Hanoi.
Sunday walks and pictures
A walk on the island is wonderful and under rated, just try it in the evening during sunset time. The hills and the valleys provide wonderful views, ideal for a peaceful walk. Wherever you are able to click your pictures, plenty of opportunities are available to click the wonderful views, vibrant landscapes, and even some adventurous ones on the island.
Picnicking and riverside tranquility
Banana Island is peaceful and ideal for a picnic. Simply pack your lunch and find yourself a comfortable location beside the river, where you can relax, eat, and feel the gentle breeze. The gentle sound of the water against the shore and the gentle rustle of the banana leaves create a soothing tune.
Relaxing on the Red River
During a warm, sunny day, the Red River is the perfect location to cool off. The swimming holes on the island are good for a cool swim. Be sure to listen to and obey the local advice and posted signs in the event that you choose to swim.
Sunset Views
As the day draws to a close, the island features lovely sunset vistas over the Red River. The city skyline, set against the hues of the sunset, is great, particularly on good days when the weather makes you feel like lounging around and taking photos.
Banana Island is just 15 to 30 minutes from Hanoi's Old Quarter on the Red River. Three main access routes make it easy to reach whether you prefer walking, cycling, or taking a scooter. The primary route via Long Bien Bridge is the most popular and straightforward for first time visitors.
Old Quarter to Banana Island
It is easy to get to the island. From the Old Quarter, head towards the direction of the Long Bien Bridge. If you're midway across the bridge, you'll see a staircase that leads down to the island. Many locals walk and bike down the staircase. If you're on a motor scooter, you can come in at number 76 on An Duong Street. Your map app might also register other routes through the area known as the West Lake (Ho Tay).
Guided tours
If you prefer a more structured visit, the best for you would be guided tours. Guided tours typically entail cycling on the island, visiting local farms, and trying various delectable Vietnamese food. Having a guided tour enhances your visit because you get to learn about the history, culture, and lovely scenery on the island.
Half-day guided tours run $25-35 and include a bike, guide, and entrance. Full-day tours ($45-65) add meals and deeper experiences. Book through Viator, GetYourGuide, or local operators. Private tours available for higher flexibility.
Timing your visit makes all the difference. October-November offers perfect weather with cool temperatures and clear skies ideal for cycling and photography. Golden hour (5:00-6:30 PM) provides the most stunning light for sunset photos. Avoid September due to monsoon rains.
Insect repellent: During the evening, the island has plenty of leaves and grass, so it becomes a perfect area for mosquitoes. Therefore, we must apply some insect repellent prior to stepping outside.
Be cautious with island farming as the plants are precious to the inhabitants. Be mindful where you tread when you're snapping pictures, and avoid causing damage to the plants as you're on the island.
2-3 hours is the optimum amount of time to spend on Banana Island, so that everyone has enough time to relax as well as roam about, without anyone feeling rushed.
Be calm: To be as the islanders and be friendly with the locals, be calm and speak softly. Most of the people I met there were ultra friendly so you shall be fine!
Stay Hydrated: Water on the island is difficult to come by, so bring enough water to keep you hydrated throughout your visit.
