If you are in Phong Nha then you are for sure going to the Phong Nha Cave Boat Station which is the place from where your journey begins all the way deep inside one of the great caves of Vietnam.
This represents the only route to the highly popular Phong Nha Cave, renowned for its beauty in karst formations, an underground river, and ancient rock formations.
Here is the location with directions to Phong nha boat station which opens at 8:00 AM and closes around 4:00 PM.
It is situated in Son Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. It lies on the bank of the Son River and right at the entrance to the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, about 45 km west of Dong Hoi City and about 500 km south of Hanoi.
Most tourists first arrive in either the airport or the train station in Dong Hoi, followed by a taxi (Grab), bus, or motorbike ride to Phong Nha town from where the boat station can easily be accessed.
Are you travelling from Hue? Then you can book a tour which includes transport from Hue and drops you in Hue and includes the tickets to Phong Nha cave and Paradise cave in the tour with guide. This Hue to Phong Nha tour provides the same under $58
Since the cave is carved deep in the limestone mountains with a great underground river system, it can only be accessed by boats. Boats can either be paddled or used with a small motor by local boatmen/women and taken along the quiet Son River up to the mouth of the cave.
This boat ride is part of the Phong Nha Cave tour because you will have an excellent chance to perceive the rural scenery: watch water buffaloes graze by the riverside and admire the life of Vietnamese people in the countryside.
If you are someone who wants to ride on a water buffalo then you can do it too at the Duck stop which is also nearby in Phong Nha :)
The two compulsory things you have to pay for visiting Phong Nha Cave are the entrance fee and the fee for renting a boat. Here is the most updated price list:
Type | Price (VND) | Price (USD) Approx. |
Ticket Price for Phong Nha Cave/per person | 150,000 VND | $6 |
Boat Rental/ per boat/ maximum 12 people | 550,000 VND | $22 |
Money-Saving Tip: If you travel alone or as a couple, you should share a boat with other tourists. Just wait for others to arrive to fill the quota of 12 persons. You will share the money, so much more budget-friendly!
After buying your ticket, you will be assigned a traditional wooden boat with a local boatwoman or a boatman. Starting to row for 5 km along the Son River, you'll pass through green fields, karst mountains, and some villages.
Your boat slows down, and the motor is turned off as you float into the darkness of Phong Nha Cave. Water falling from ancient stalactites in the silence of this space could be magical.
Inside, one finds spectacular, sometimes animal, mythical creatures, or even human figure-like limestone formations. It is 7,729 meters long, of which only about 1,500 meters are open for tourism.
The boat leaves the cave, and you blissfully take in the scenic ride back to the station.
Tour Duration: About 1.5 to 2 hours.
Best Season:
The best time to visit here is from March to August when the weather is not scalding and the river is still.
Avoid:
Rains from September to November are heavy enough to overflow rivers and might cause flooding; hence, it is sometimes closed.
Best Time of Day:
Hitting the road in the early morning will save one from the crowd anytime between 8 AM and 10 AM.
Take Cash: There are no ATMs at the station, so take Vietnamese Dong for tickets and tips. Remember cash is king in most of Vietnam!
Dress Appropriately: Light and comfortable clothes with non-slippery shoes will see you through.
Take Waterproof Bags: Keep your phone, camera, and everything that must not get wet, protected.
Be Nice to the Rowers: Most of the people operating the boats are women from nearby villages. If you want you can tip about 50,000 to 100,000 VND which is a great deal to the rower but again it's not mandatory at all!
Do Not Litter: Take your trash with you to maintain Phong Nha's beauty.
In case one has more time in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, here are some nearby attractions not to be missed:
Paradise Cave: This is a magnificent dry cave with awesome patterns of rock formation. It has close to 5000 google reviews with an average rating of 4.7 stars so you can imagine how popular and well liked Paradise cave is!
Dark Cave: For adventure-loving guests, as there is a zipline over rivers and a mud bath. Bring your own swimsuit and enjoy the mud bath in the dark cave, you are going to love it.
Botanic Garden: A nature-based trekking area with waterfalls and wildlife (don’t expect tigers, only small animals like junglefowl!).
We were surprised that not many people were there when we visited since it was a pretty nice area. Botanic garden tour includes two main waterfalls and an easy hike to reach there through dense forest. We loved it honestly and the lack of crowd was a blessing since we get to spend our sweet time relaxing at every spot on the way!
Mooc Spring Eco-Trail: It is a quiet area which grants so much for the adventure of swimming and kayaking. Mooc spring is a must visit spot in Phong Nha if you only have a day or two there.
About 30 minutes back and forth, 45 minutes in the cave.
At the moment, there are ticket sales only on-site at the boat station. So, NO - you can’t buy tickets online. Many tourist agencies sell them in a tour package.
No, it's OK; it's so well-lighted inside the cave, and furthermore, the rowers will bring flashlights if necessary.
No, it is not allowed so as not to contribute to the preservation of its ecosystem. But you can swim at the nearby Mooc Spring Eco-Trail.
No, it is the only possible way to get to the cave, only by motorboat from Phong Nha Cave Boat Station.
It depends. When the water level is very high, it is closed temporarily.
Definitely, in fact we highly recommend you do a tour by yourself if you do not have many days in Phong Nha and love to explore things on your own rather than be restricted by a group in a guided tour.
